Hi all, I'm new to the Jeep world and new to the forum. I have a 2004 Liberty 3.7 with 127K miles about three months ago and I love it. I bought the Jeep from a local but reputable dealer but it didn't come with a complete service history from the previous owners.
My purpose of seeking the forum is this:
I'm pretty good with vehicle maintenance, and since I don't have a shop or a gnarly tool set, I get all service that's messy or needs to get done today at a shop. Yesterday I got all the fluids in the car serviced (coolant flush/refill, oil/filter change, transfer case and differential fluids changed, transmission fluid/filter changed, and power steering, brake, and A/C system checked). Remember, I have no idea when the last time any fluids were changed (or if they were ever changed at all) except the engine oil.
Now, I have never had any problems with the transmission except for what sounded to me like some hard shifts (very occasionally), strange kickdown behavior (lagging or skipping 2 gears) and gear whine (that's why I got all the fluids changed). After getting the service done I went home; no problems. Then I left for an evening out, and I noticed the ****** slipping through a couple turns after getting off the highway, and stopping at some red lights.
A couple hours later on my way home, it slipped a few times while cold and I had to shift a few times manually to get it to engage. For the next 30 minutes during my trip home there were no problems.
Since I just got the vehicle serviced, I'm bringing it back to them to fix. But before that, I wanna check the fluid. I have read in my Haynes manual that there are two different automatic transmissions in the Liberty and they require different "check-the-fluid" procedures, and I can't seem to find the type my vehicle has. Is there a shortcut, something obvious, that I'm just not seeing?
Thanks a lot guys, glad to be part of the forum.

Thanks for the replies. I just noticed in my Haynes manual that: "The 45RFE [automatic transmission] is used on 2002 and 2003 models...The 42RLE is used on 2003 and later models." So that clears up that question. Now I can check the fluid.

It is not specified on my service invoice which fluid was used to fill it after flushing (and the shop is closed Sundays). Is there a way to physically tell the difference between the two? There's still time in the day for me to get to the store.

Got it all filled and it works now. Tomorrow I take it back to the shop to negotiate the terms of my refund!
Next question: Why does nothing happen when I pull the windshield washer stalk?

Just kidding.
