New Owner 2004 2.5 CRD

Hello everyone,
This is my first post. I have just bought a 2004 CRD 2.5 KJ.
Primarily I have bought this for use as a family vehicle, but would also like the option to be able to test it's capabilities off the road too.
My first question for you is going to be wheels and tyres.
Here in the UK there is a fairly cheap supplier of wheels and tyres to suit this vehicle but wanted to get some info before i go ahead and purchase.
So i'm looking at a set of black Modular Steel wheels, sizes as follows:
8" wide x 15" dia x ET -32
or
10" wide x 15" dia x ET -32

Tyres I was thinking 31x10.5" Mud Terrain, for an aggressive look.

Will i need to fit a lift kit for this setup and will there be any rubbing issues that you know of ?

Some pictures of similar setups would be amazing.

Our KJ got a 2" lift and 1.25" spacers in order to fit 245/75R16 (~30") tires on stock wheels. They still rub a little though.

You'll need more lift again to run a 31" tire. Most guys run 7 or 8" wide wheels on their KJs.

Ive decided to go for 16 x 8" steels with ET00 and the tyres will be Insa Turbo Dakar mud terrain 245/70/16. Will this set up be OK on standard suspension ride height?

VERY BAD idea.
First 8 inch wide wheel is too wide for most tires you can run, especially if stock height. 7 inch wide with 5 inches of back spacing, so stock wheels, next 245-70-16s will more than likely rub if you are sagged any at all
measure from middle of the wheel in front to bottom of the flare , if under 19 inches then smaller size tire or suspension upgrade

When you say 8" is too wide, are you referring to manufacturer guidelines for 245 tyres?
I currently have a set 235/70/15 Roadians stretched onto a set of 8.75" extended rims on my VW T4, manufacturer charts say no but in reality it's absolutely fine and there are no issues whatsoever.

I read on other threads on here that the 245/70/16 tyres fit just fine under the arches with standard springs??
I guess the ET00 may cause problems but I assumed since a lot of guys run 1.5" spacers this would be roughly the same poke anyway?

Wasn't questioning your experience. Its just really confusing when on other forms there are guys saying it is possible, like this KJ Unlifted with 245/70/16 on 16x8 Cragars

OK so assuming this guy isn't telling the whole truth, i need to find 7" wide instead.
Is there a way to calculate what 5" back spacing equivalent is in ET ?
It's all metric in the UK now and offsets are measured by ET.
Ideally i want to get the wheels to sit a bit further out that the stock alloys,
a bit like these:

The thing is yes some have done it, but turning radius is lessened since you have changed the arc in which the wheel travels, it will rub everytime you hit a large bump. Look at how close they are to the flare, funny thing is you see these ( a few pictures ) and never hear from them again

So am I right thinking that 7" wide with 4" back spacing effectively gives 3" of outside dish with 1" outward poke compared to stock 5" back spacing?
I don't mind running 235's if it means a more comfortable fit

LIFTED, 7 inch wide 4 inches of backspacing
unlifted 7 inch wide 5 inches of backspacing

So i found a place here that sells 16" modular steels at 7" wide with an offset of ET30. According to the chart that is just a tiny bit over 5" backspacing so they should fit just fine. The same shop recommended I put 235/70 Insa Dakar MT tyres and offered me a good priced package. Assuming these budget tyres will probably only last 10k anyway i will opt for this setup for now and in future if i decide to lift it I can add spacers and go up a size or two on the next set of tyres. In the meantime i will play around with spacers and see how far I can bring the wheels out for moderate driving. At least its reversable that way. Thanks for the tips

Anyway, here it is all standard looking just after i bought it. Need to get it looking a bit more aggressive but don't have huge amounts of money and i need to keep it practical for every day use as well.

I have two KJ's one CRD, one 3.7L 6spd. Both are stock, unlifted and both have 245/70-16. Just put Nokian Rotiva's on the CRD and drove it across the continent. Great tires in all the inclement weather conditions encountered on that journey.

What wheels are you running? Would you post a picture of the CRD please?
