So my poor ol' Jeep has been sitting in my garage for the last couple months, unregistered, and in need of a new torque convertor and transmission. I recently acquired a two-wheeled replacement to take over DD duties so that has relegated the KJ to a off-road / hunting / fun / toy vehicle. So, I'm not in a huge hurry and plan on undertaking this endeavor solo as much as possible. I have never dropped a trans prior to this, but that hasn't stopped me from fixing / replacing all the other things on my Libby, so I'm not going to start now.
Plan of action is this:
-Replace trans with junkyard unit (hopefully low miles, fingers crossed)
-New torque convertor (not from China)
-New shocks and coils in the rear
-Need to replace ball joint on rear boomerang
-Need to change spark plugs
-Need to flush coolant system
-Need to fix front passenger window regulator
Most of that list is easy, but I'm creating this thread more for transmission related questions and feedback. My Jeep is a '06 Renegade 4x4 auto. There seems to be some variation between available 42rle transmissions. I am under the impression I have a two plug model.
Anyone know of a good source for a replacement? I have been tracking local inventory and haven't had much luck. Just a place in Yuma, AZ that doesn't ship. Also any input for a torque convertor?
This is pretty much the start of my project now that the busy holiday season of 6 day 66 hour work weeks are winding down. Any advice on what else I should replace are welcome. Also any links to trans replacement how-to's and guides would be a godsend. Curious as to any prep or preventative maintenece that would apply to the replacement trans as well. Seals, bearings, other things that need to be addressed? I plan on scouring the internet for all this early stage info, but figured I'd throw this out here first.
A preemptive thank you and sorry for the long rambling. Happy New year too!
