Odd sound when sliding/braking in snow

I'm new to the liberty & jeep world, and just recently purchased a 2007 jeep liberty. So far I love it, however I just got my first chance to take it out in the snow a few days ago. I noticed a very strange sound every time I would lock the brakes up in the snow, or if the jeep would slide at all when making a turn in the snow. The only time I hear it is when they lock up or skid in the snow, and I have never heard it prior to taking the jeep out in the snow. It sounds like metal on metal clanking/or bouncing of of each other (it's hard to describe). it definitely sounds like its coming from the front of the end of the jeep near the tires. like I said i'm not that familiar with jeeps, and was wondering if anyone has any idea what might be causing this issue, or what is actually producing the sound, and also if it is something that should be of a concern and or fixed. Thanks in advance to any suggestions anyone might have.

Yep it's the ABS pump.It scares poeple so much since they never really actually have the ABS kick on that they let off the brakes thinking something is wrong and cause more accidents.ABS should be outlawed as it has been shown not to decrease accidents and actually increases stopping distances on all surfaces.

Yep it's the ABS pump.It scares poeple so much since they never really actually have the ABS kick on that they let off the brakes thinking something is wrong and cause more accidents.ABS should be outlawed as it has been shown not to decrease accidents and actually increases stopping distances on all surfaces.

1 of 2 of my accidents was due to abs engaging. I was cruising about 30mph in a 45 and gave my self a huuuuge distance to stop. Everyting was fine untill about 10 feet before the car in front of me and then bam it kicks in and i slid right into the car in front of me. And no matter what the cause i was at fault. The second collision was due to brake lines popping. He truck was 2 weeks old so i brought to the dealership i bought it from and said make sure you keep the bad parts for he insurance company but of course they didnt. And once again it was my fault. Thinking back i should have gotten a lawyer.

Yep ABS. But this shouldn't start that often, that mean you should change your driving and learn how not to lock the brake. That could save you life and your liby.

You guys DO realize that ABS keeps the wheels from locking, allowing a (smart) driver a chance to avoid hitting someone in the first place, correct?

Now I do understand that a good driver doesn't NEED ABS, they can do that on their own, but most drivers are... well... stupid.

Eh it's a tossup with ABS. I think it's bad when a dumb person doesn't have it but good if someone with any trace of intelligence doesn't have it.

Now I do understand that a good driver doesn't NEED ABS, they can do that on their own, but most drivers are... well... stupid.
You do realize that if your ABS kicks on,on wet surfaces or ice,you do not have enough traction to brake let alone turn.

Agree, if you drive so you don;t need ABS everything will be fine, but when ABS kicj in it's trying to get you out of a dangerous situation and it wont be a 100% success.

The folks that claim that ABS causes accidents are the same people that claim motorcycle helmets cause neck injures in a crash:rolleyes:

ABS, like all other safety enhancements, is a tool. When used properly it does decrease stopping distance and increase control. When treated as a saviour to poor driving habits, they will all fail.

If poeple these days would have actually learned how to drive and properly take care of there vehicles there would be no ABS,ESP,Traction control,or TPMS.Vehicles would cost $2500+ less and the world would be a much happier place.

Unfortunatly you are wrong.
I am totally for the helmet on a motorcycle and it's a chance they are mandatory over here in canada. At least they are in Quebec. I also think that rule and road law enforcement is insufficient.
The point about ABS is that once a security system kick in, it's because the driver failed to drive properly using the right driving technique to prevent to wheel to lock or the car to slide and everything.
Not like it's hard to brake more early or pump the brake when it's icy. It's lazy to let the car do it for you. Then what happen if the device stop to work or partially work? accident, because the driver don;t know how to react. Like ford and their self parking car, once you get in a car the don't and you try to parallel park you fail because you don't remember how. I'm glad my GF don;t have that option on her focus.

So why haven't I pulled my ABS fuse yet?? Definitely agree that it has made drivers worse. The only thing that I would potentially say is a positive of ABS is if you need to break while cornering...but that is kinda just grasping at straws. I can't stand the regular use of GPS either. I might use it on a long trip. But there are seriously people that use their GPS to drive around town...not only are they paying more attention to the stupid screen stuck to their windshield than the road, they become completely dependent and never learn how to get anywhere on their own.

It's not saying it's an excuse to follow closer or drive faster, but if the unexpected happens, I'd rather stop sooner than later.

Martin= I think we are in agreement. I'm saying ABS is a driving aid, and shouldn't be depended on to fix poor habits. There is no substitute for proper driving or learning techniques to become a better driver. And yes, some people do use the technology as a crutch, but that's not the fault of the technology, it's the fault of the human.

Perhaps my dyslexia is muddling the point I'm trying to make:nutkick:

The only time I've ever broke out into a cold sweet in slippery conditions was when I had ABS in my F150. That thing scared the crap out of me. ABS removes all braking control from the driver when it comes time for the wheels to skid.

Okay,to much beer.

ABS increses stopping distance and decrease braking power.That is a know fact that ABS increases stoping distance.


When I'm on ice I don't even use my brakes at all till i'm at about 5-10mph.If I have to panic stop on ice my left foot does a much better job at modulating the brakes then a computer.The 1st vehicle I had that had ABS was a '96 Ford Taraus and damn near broke my knee testing the ABS,the 2nd was my '01 WK and I slammed on the brakes and kept right on going right through the stop sign with no indication of slowing down at all(no one around,just seeing how it worked),it took over 1/4 mile to stop from 50mph when I had the brake pedal to the floor.I promptly pulled both ABS fuses in both vehicles and never had a issue stopping on ice after that.
