Again I see your point, but some quick search ( even wikipedia ) will show you that ABS can increase breaking distance and increase control. NHTSA wrote a report few years ago on that, the point of that is avoiding impact by steering. Unfortunately, people keep looking at what they are going to hit instead of looking where they want to go, so they simply never steer and hit or go off the road.

I think the overall point is that you will stop sooner with ABS then you will slamming the brakes to the floor and locking them up without ABS.

That being said, if you're not a crappy driver and don't lock up the brakes...and know what to do when you start to lose traction, you will be able to stop sooner without ABS. Essentially, proper technique without ABS is more effective than just pressing the brakes to the floor and letting ABS do its thing.

Hate ABS...never fails to get in the way of my winter driving techniques, even kicks in on dirt roads going around a gravelly corner that otherwise would be no big deal if the tire loses a smidgeon of traction...but wakes you up every time because it is unplanned and unexpected (for those who know how to drive and aren't doing twelve other things at the same time.) Every instance the ABS kicks in I am surprised, then peeved. Self modulating the brakes using pedal/steering feel has always worked for me. With the Liberty system, if I hit the brakes on snowy roads, even modestly, ABS kicks in and I lose control to the computer. Can't stand that. As a driving aide during a rare panic stop ABS is designed to be helpful and actually works as intended. But, during routine driving when the driver knows what to do the sensitivity threshold is too low in the Liberty because it's coupled to the even more annoying traction control.

Yup...problem is vehicle engineering and design works to the lowest common denominator driver...the lousy one...all for safety. Bad way to design, versus elevating people to become better drivers. Instead, gov't dumbs us all down under the guise of saving people from themselves.
