My 2004 Liberty has had the Part time dash light on since I switched it into 4wd during the last snow storm. The same day I switched it back to 2wd drive but the part time light is still on. I was wondering if this would affect gas mileage at all, since the Jeep is not technically driving in 4wd, only the light is on. I also was wondering do I need to get it fix right away or can I wait. I do not have much money right now, so any fixes may have to wait. Lastly, is there anyway I can check to make sure the Jeep is not in 4wd while I am in 2wd. I am fairly new to Jeeps, I got the one I have in November. So Any advice would indeed help. Thanks

You would know if it was in 4 wheel driving on dry pavment. And no its not going to hurt you mpg because you are in 2 wheel. Have you tried to engage 4hi and then put it back into 2hi? And if that doesnt work maybe try disconnecting your battery for like 20 min and put the terminal back on

Part time light stuck

I myself have been researching the stuck in Part Time light on. Mine started when I took the Jeep to have the driveshaft removed for a rebuild. The mechanic must have flipped something b/c the light has been on ever since. A few days later the mechanic re-installed the rebuilt driveshaft and the light stayed on. When I asked him about it, his reply "I don't have a clue why your light is on". I think I will try another mechanic. Everything was great until he removed the driveshaft.

Good luck,

It's really a simple, five minute fix. Just replace the transfer case position switch. The threads linked above will tell you everything you need to know.

Try giving the transfer switch a sharp thwack...sometimes replacement isn't necessary when they get stuck like this.

Pulling the battery and putting it back on while the switch is in 2WD should reset it. But in the long haul the switch will fail (I run mine without the light.)

Good to try the battery disconnect first just in case...saves time crawling under the Heep or removing interiors parts to get at the switch. Didn't work for mine so I pulled the console and boot then whacked the switch to break (or "adjust") the stickage...but needed to clean those areas anyway from too much crud gettin' spilled on road trips. :uhoh2:

Not really. It's a mechanical switch that is physically broken or out of spec in some way.

I got a new switch online for somewhere around $60, so it is not a cheap part. It also takes a 1 1/2 " socket to replace it. I have read about how some have replaced it from going under the Jeep but I went through the work of pulling the consoled out and replacing it from the top. The whole job still only took about 30 min.
