Re: Icefields Parkway Banff-Jasper

Had a trip to Jasper this week. Rainy but hey, very nice cruise. This is a top 10 drive, highly recommended September- June. Occasional winter closures. Sunny pictures later (hopefully).

I second that. I love that drive. Have you gone up via the Forestry Trunk Road though? Less scenic but the roads can be a lot of fun.

A couple of mine. First one is view from the Forestry Trunk Road over Waiparous last summer. Others are on the south section by the Oldman River.

Forestry Trunk Road - Oldman River

I have a photo of my Liberty at that exact spot on the Forestry Trunk Rd, will post when I'm home! I use that road, I'm in the Ya-Ha-Tinda a few times a year, and September '03 I went quite a ways into the Waiparous for the heck of it, dodging the major mud holes. Any serious 4x4ing in there would need a change of tires, lift, etc. But I had a gas anyway.

I know the Oldman pretty well, I oversaw the archaeology mitigation before the reservoir was put it, back in the mid-80s, and had camps at farmhouses near Head-Smashed-In for 4 years in a row - we did a lot of exploring. The fishing used to be fantastic back there, I dunno what it's like now. Great country.

Writing On Stone

I had some surveying and recording work to do at Writing On Stone past couple of weeks. This is an amazing place, Alberta Provincial Park, just near Coutts- Sweetgrass border crossing. These pics don't do it justice. One pic taken just a couple km north of AB - Montana border shows the Sweetgrass Hills in Montana. I was using the Liberty to tow and snap dead trees for firewood, and punctured a sidewall on a short stout branch, minor drag. Costco gave me 100% on the tire (Michelin Cross Terrain), good thing as it only had 5000 km on it. I can post more scenic hoodoo scenery shots or even rock art if anyone wants to see.

Next trip starting in two weeks is out to Lytton west of Kamloops, up to Williams Lake, westward across Chilcotin Plateau to Bella Coolla, overnight ferry across to Vancouver Island then down to Victoria, across to Seattle, across Washington to British Columbia then back to Calgary. Plan 2 weeks.

So not only do you have the same FTR pic as me, you'll have some of the same Vancouver Island and BC pics? I just got back from Calgary->Osoyoos->Van->round the Island->Sushwap->Calgary. Love the scenery out there.

Ok, here's the pics from my recent NH vacation....


A shot from an overlook on Bear Notch Road in Bartlett.....it's so twisty and curvy that nobody is allowed to live on the road and they close it off and gate it in the winter...VERY fun with Libby's manual ******!

Two shots from the Flume Gorge....we hiked all ridiculously uphill and downhill 2.25 miles of this beast....ouch.....lol. Great scenery, though.

And yes, we did drive to the top of Mt. Washington. Good lord was it windy and cold up there! It was 83 when we started up from the base, and it turned into 42 degrees with a 23 MPH wind at the summit! Very VERY cool trip, though. I'd recommend it to anyone who has the opportunity. Libby handled it just fine (thanks for all the advice everyone!), no overheating on the climb and no brake issues on the descent (manual ****** helped a bit with the descent.) I did meet some nice if rather silly folks with a brand spankin' new 05 Limited (AT) who disregarded all the signs for the turnouts to cool their brakes on the descent. The smell was horrific!

The top of Tuckerman Ravine. You do not want to know how many people have died hiking and skiing this thing. Trust me. For those of you who have seen it from the ground, it's even scarier from the top...lol.

I have a few more pics of the Flume and some more pics from Mt Washington if anyone wants to see some. It's pretty cool to look DOWN on the tops of some of the biggest ski mountians in the Northeast!
