Trip Report

mOth: Where's the mine entrance at I can see in your photo above?

Finished the Calgary - BC - Seattle trip. Great time. 4200 km (2600 miles). Averaged 19.49 mi/gal (US), 23.41 mi/gal (CDN). Quite varied driving. from 4x4 stuff up steep rock grades north of Lytton, about 400 miles of gravel, and about 150 miles of 80 mi/hr (Hwy 2 in central Washington). Peaked out at 100 mi/hr at one point, Liberty still had guts to go though not much. So a good test of overall mileage. Man, these are solid vehicles, though steering is a bit jittery at speed. Lower parts of rear fenders, the areas attached to doors just above the little black bit, are now showing rock pitting.

Here's some pics of road into Bella Coola from east - 12% grades, one lane in spots. Also a couple for rock art fans, from Thorsen Creek site just east of Bella Coola.

Here she is loaded down. I'm suprised the rear doesn't sag... I'm used to the way Ford Explorers sag huge with even the smallest amount of weight in the rear. In these pics there's about 150lbs of gear in the back and 3 passengers (2 in the back seat, one up front.. add 200lbs when I get in crazy.gif). The canoes and roof rack weigh about 120-130 lbs. All told it's over 1000lbs with very little sag and it drove like a charm.

I dunno, they were rented, just like the canoes. I figure they were the 72" (6ft) bars but I could be off by a bit. My guess comes from the fact that the vehicle is 71.8" at it's widest (fenders likely) and by eyeballing it, the bars were about as wide as the vehicle.

I was thinking about this while the staff member and I were putting the stuff up there. I think if I bought a set of crossbars, I'd order the Thule 450 Set, I'd get all the cool padded carriers and ratcheting tie downs and I'd make sure I got a set of the 72" crossbars because often we end up with two canoes on the roof.

yeah, I've done a single canoe on the roof, and ratchet ties are key. I just put it directly on the crossbars I have and ratcheted it down. Didn't even need to tie the front and back it was so solid, just two straps across the canoe.

Heh.. I don't think I'd be that brave. Too much stop and go traffic as I drive through Toronto (lots of panic stops as people swerve everywhere) so I need the front and rear straps. Besides, they make good strangling ropes when people REALLy pi$$ me off (whistle)

My Lights

I customed some lights that fit in the same spot that the tow hooks go into. I have a grille guard so my tow hooks got removed. I plan on buying the front hidden hitch soon so I have some tow ability in the front. Sorry for the night shots, I will post daytime shots soon enough!!

Re: Trip Report

That's in Strathcona Park on Vancouver Island. You have to follow the main road all the way almost to Myra Falls. There's a rough gravel road that branches off called the Jim Mitchell Lake Road. The mine entrance is at the very end of that, right over the lake. It's pretty rough towards the end, but easy enough for the KJ.
