Your project is looking really nice! Someone on here gave me a recommendation for rocker panels or rock sliders... I can't seem to find it...I ordered some nerf bars, but I don't know if they offer any protection. I want something that will protect my jeep body but look like the stock trim (see picture) My liberty came stock with the body trim that looks like tube steel rock sliders, but it seems to be just a flimsy trim ...Is there something real protecting it underneath the trim, or is she vulnerable right now?

Ahhhh … thanks for posting that! Going through this thread again was a blast… posts 150-160 made me spit take 10 yrs into the future LMFAO

on to business… yes your rockers are nekkid so you’ll want something. The stock (if you could find a set) rails sit right up tight to the plastic rockers and look good IMO, but the are really only just slightly better than nothing as they cannot support more than a couple hundred pounds combined.

What is still available out there? All the options I once shopped are gone

Perhaps the gurus know…

My bars are really there so my 4'11" wife has a step to get into my Jeep. I replaced them last spring so the ones in this (sadly neglected) thread have been updated. The new ones look like this:

They are pretty solid but I wouldn't want to actually try and slide them across any serious rocks. (Playful, carefree rocks and I might take a chance.) ;)

Surprisingly not slippery. They have grooves from one end to the other.

Oh, and the roof rack is new as well. The old one gave me ten years of faithful service but was really piling on the rust.

I used Plasti Dip on the wheels and it has held up very well. I just masked the rims off but some people use a deck of cards slid in around the rim which may be easier. One thing I forgot to do was to wrap some lug nuts (old ones if you have them) in masking tape and lay them in the rim to cover where they end up when you put the wheels back on. I didn't do that and when I torqued them down it pulled on the Plasti Dip and tore it a little. A quick touch-up took care of that. Take all the wheels off, mask the rims, cover the five lug nut holes, then apply 5 or 6 very light coats. It dries almost instantly so waiting 5-10 minutes between coats is fine. You can do the whole job in under an hour, plus however long it takes to remove and replace the wheels. I did this ten years ago and it is still going strong. I did have to touch them up here and there when I bought new tires seven years ago.

Thank you, thank you. Is there any prepping the wheels (sanding, etc.) before Plasti Dipping?

I made sure they were clean. It's been ten years but I think I just scrubbed them down and then wiped them off with some rubbing alcohol. I know I did not go to any great lengths to do a lot of prep work. It is such an easy job that I figured I'd just give it a shot and re-do it if I made too many rookie mistakes. Other than touching up the area around the lug holes that was not necessary.

I did not take any pictures while applying it. Do a search and you can find some from other people - that's where I saw the "deck of cards" trick to save time masking.

One thing I can't emphasize enough is to do very light coats of the Plasti Dip. The first coat should look like a light film of dust. The second coat should look just a bit "dustier". It is tempting to just glob it on there and get it over with but I don't think it would adhere as well.
