One of my pulley's is starting to make noise on my 04 KJ with the 3.7L. I can't figure out which one it is. Could it be the tensior? Is there a good way to tell which one?

That's the noise I was hearing from my kj. Turned out to be my power steering pulley cracked.

Not wanting to confuse the issue but I had a similar type of noise and it turned out to be the alternator. (Dynamo?) (Generator?) Sorry for the English/American confusion. I think you call them the generator? Take the serpentine belt off and spin everything that spins by hand including the idler pulleys. My alternator/generator/dynamo had an OAD (Overrun Alternator Decoupler) which was noisy. It's like a one way clutch on the alternator pulley, so spin that both ways and see what sounds or feels rough. If the bearing is shot on anything, you should be able to hear or feel it. Good luck. This is what I found, this isn't normal right? and I turned each pulley back and forth and spun them and the power steering pulley is the only that remotely made a simliar noise. So the put the belt back on, started it back up and its where I think the noise is coming from. So the million dollar question...can just the pulley be replaced or do I gotta replace the whole thing?

Ok so with a little research, the split is supposed to be there, however this brings me to my next question, am I getting into something big now? IE as the pump itself going bad? This is the wife's daily driver mostly so I don't drive the Jeep on a daily basis...need to take it for a spin and see what I notice heh

Yeah that split is supposed to be there. My crack was on the front "face" of the pulley. Have you tried some WD40 or any kind of lube liquid around the nut in the middle of the pulley? If that effects the sound at all and steering is ok, it might rule out a dying PS pump.

Will speed things up drastically.Be careful using it around turning objects. Most common culprits are the tensioner pulley's(2 of them),replace the whole unit,or the AC compressor on a KJ.Check the waterpump also, just because it ain't leaking does not mean the bearings are bad.
