I just took off the rear diff cover and there is no magnet in there...anywhere. It is my assumption whoever did the previous fluid change(before I owned it) lost it....and is it necessary?

Yes it pulls the small metal shaving out of the oil. It keeps the metal out of the bearing and against the ring and pinion.

It's a good idea to have it in there to collect any filings in the fluid, also as an indication of problems if you start getting flakes on it.

Hit your nearest Napa or Advance, tell them you need a magnet for your rear diff, they usually have some universal transmission pan magnets you can toss in.

Are you sure you looked really good? Then Mag on a 8.25 is right below the carrier and is very thin...

Thanks all....I cleaned out the entire diff real good, even used my 1000w work light still did not see anything.:) I will go to napa. Can I just place it anywhere in the diff through the fill hole as I had to close her up to keep the day moving.

You don't mean to say you're just going to pitch one in there are you? That'd be the fastest way to wreck a diff that I can think of. Better drain the diff, clean it well and try to glue/epoxy/cement the magnet to the bottom middle of the diff. If you can't get one to stick there, try the lowest mid line position of the diff cover. At least that you can clean up well and get something to stick to.

Can't you just mount a big magnet on the ouside of the diff? It would still "attract" all those metal shavings until you change the fluid again.

The magnet is on the bottom of the diff, it's got some grooves in it, mine looked like it was cast into the diff, I rubbed it when the mechanic had the cover off, and it didn't seem like it would move. I was very small about one inch square.

I have that...I was expecting a magnet similar to what was in my ****** pan. If that is it I guess I am good. Thanks all
