I need to put some rock rails on the KJ. They will be for off road use, not just for looks.

I've done a search on the subject and found much has been written about rock rails. I don't want to spend a bunch of time reading through all of the old posts, so.... any suggestions, OEM or aftermarket? If aftermarket, who makes the best one, quality and price considered?

Thanks....

The OEM one's are more for looks, they will last about one medium hit and then they are done. The 2 best one's on the market are Rock Lizards Skink sliders(availeable in standard, step, and super sliders(these have a tubular bar welded on the outer edge)),and Boulder bars.I can't say anything about the BB's since I don't have then, but I do have the Super Skink sliders from RL and they are worth there wieght in gold!Very heavy duty, here is his web site---http://www.rocklizardfabrications.com/Page%201.htm---very resonabliy priced for a totally awesome product.I have landed ******* my outer tubes and have not even bent or dented them, just scrapped some paint off. Here is a pic of my sliders,These are the "standard length" super skink slider(cutting of the lower flare required for '02-'04),his normal sliders there are no cutting involved.BB=$310.95,RL skinks(regular)=$250,RL step sliders=$275,and the RL super skinks=$380,all prices do not include shipping and handling.

Another vote for the RLs although the BBs are a fine product. As said before, one of the smartest things you can do for your rig if you want any chance of keeping it nicer looking.

Another vote for Rock lizard. They cost alittle to much IMHO but they are good. I made my own for less than half of what he charges though.

Yep you can make your own and save some money, many have(like jeepjeepster).Just remember that quility work isn't cheap, getting really good welds is a must if you plan on using the rockrails.

now, they wont last as long if you constantly run on em', but will last quite a while.

granted, if i had the extra $250 at the time, i would have went with upgraded ones, but moose gave me a good deal.

Sometimes youve got to think, if you have the OEM rails and bend them offroad, would anything of gotten hit if they weren't even there? I know its a risk, Im just saying.. :)

Yeh but how many times(and $$$$) do you want to spend till you get rails that will live up to the abuse?

when i finally pancake these, i will get sturdy ones, but those were $100, and they've lasted. moab was the first time i've bent them up. there arent any trails THAT bad here in tx or surrounding area, so it would seem to me that they'll last until the next moab trip. after i get back from there, it may be time to re invest.

If and when you wack them hard enough to bend them just one time then they surely did their job. $100 is a good deal. Even $250 for the RL one is. One hit and they paid for themselves. There was one spot I backed out and around last weekend because I have no rock rails so I'm thinking about some too.

I lucked out on a local set of Mopar rails, free. Can't argue with that... you do see used ones pop up now and then so that might be a good way to go if on a budget, otherwise I would have sprung for RL's too, love the look of the Super Skinks like on tjkj2002's, and sounds like they're super heavy duty in comparison!

RL are great! For the price of the regular you can't beat it when versing the Mopar ones. Night/Day depending on your off-road style. It doesn't take only the Moab to bend up a rock rail though. The single larger rock sitting on that easy trail is all that it takes.

If you still haven't bought them yet, I'm just chiming in another vote for the Rock Lizard skinks. I have just the basic sliders, and scraped them pretty good my first trail out.

Just reading this thread got me thinking again. I was supposed to trade a member here for a set of OEM rails (I've already held up my side of that bargain), but he hasnt come thru with his. It happens, and I'm not upset about it, but I'm going to have to do something soon with this.

My elder daughter has Cerebral Palsy and is having difficulty getting in the KJ herself. I need to find a free or near-free set of take-offs for my '02. Maybe like KeswickDave I can get lucky and find someone locally? :)

Blu,

I'm not sure if I understand correctly or not, but I just wanted to clarify - the OEM "rock rails" which I have and I believe we are talking about, are not suitable for use as a step - they are tucked in under.

Sounds more like you're looking for running boards or side steps?

The bee's knee's !

Hello all,

The Rock Lizard Skink Super Sliders are next on the list of accessories to buy for our KJ.
Just from looking at the photo's alone, they look like high quality.
And the fact that TJKJ endorsed them, and by the looks of his Rig and how it's equiped, I'm sure they can take what ever you can dish out.
A set of those will set be back round $5.00 CDN.

Sorry I can't say enough about Rock Lizard's Skinks, they are truelly worth there weight in gold.3 days after I mounted them I used them in MOAB.I came down on just the outer tubes(I have the super skinks) very hard many times and only scraped the paint on them, the tubes never bent or anything. They have proven themselfs since on trails here in CO also. Many of the local KJ'ers here run them and love them.I have not heard one bad thing about them.

Cool. I'll be placing an order within the next few dayfor a set of
Skink Super Sliders.
I'm also looking at their front and rear bumpers... Or an ARB!
Say, what did you pay for your front bumper?
They sell here in B.C.,Canada for around $1300.00.

(Cheers)
