Has anyone ever taken their Liberty on sand dunes? Is there anything special that needs to be done before I can do such (aside from letting air out of the tires when I get up there) If you have taken it on the dunes how well did it perform? Thanks!

As long as you air down, I think you should be fine on the sand you would find in Michigan. If you came out here to Glamis, it would be a different story as there are dunes which are hundreds of feet high and require huge amounts of horsepower to get up (think tube framed dune buggy with a Chevy 350 lol).

I HATE sand
We ride at a place that has a "beach" and every frikin time I take the TJ out there I end up stuck on the hill that goes out ,framed out in less than 2 seconds last time ,sure I can back down and try again but it *****

How ever the KJ seems to do just fine ,right up and over
we have basicaly the same gearing
the TJ weighs maybe 200# less and they both had the same basic tire size
but the TJ has more torque to spin the tires at slow speed wich IMO is what hurts me every time

Kj's do great in the dunes. So much fun to be had! The only bad thing is the weight limits steep long hill climbs. You've got to keep it in the sweet spot on the power band and keep your momentum up...

You'll be fine as long as your air down appropriately before entering the dunes. Last time I was there (5 years ago with my XJ) they didn't have an airing station at the Dunes, you had to drive 1/2 mile down. It's not a huge deal as long as you go slow and steady.

SAND = INSANE CLEANING. It's gonna be all over the place, even if you think everything is clean. Shut the vents and don't use your fans until you are done. When your done ensure to hit up the wash station.

Oh, you'll need to mount a flag to the front of the Jeep, this is mandatory. I'm not sure where a good mounting point for the bracket/flag would be on a stock front end. HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!!

I had some experience in the Moroccan sand dunes, guided by a local expert. He was quite impressed with the capabilities of the KJ. He prefers to drive in Full Time (with the central diff open), certainly NOT in low, because you need to keep going. There is sufficient power (he called the vehicle "relatively light"), but the engine suffered from overheating, went to the red mark.
I had already lowered the tire pressure on my BFG AT's, but he felt it was not enough. As a real expert, he lowered it further with his cell phone antenna in the valve, measuring by instinct only. The tires performed very well. Measuring afterwards, the expert had reduced the pressure down to 11 or 12 lbs! That works fine as long as you stay in pure sand.

I was at Cape Cod recently (just posted some pics actually - http://www.jeepkj.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33453), driving on the beach and one off-beach road in the dunes.

They recommend airing down to 12 psi, which I did, and I had no problems but it was mostly flat. There was one hill which I thought would be a challenge but she walked up it pretty easily.

I was running in 4-hi all the time.
