Sea Foam

Mileage dropped off recently in my 3.7 Liberty and the local Advance Auto Parts guy saw me buying Marvel Mystery Oil and suggested trying Sea Foam instead.
I have used mystery oil in my lawn mowers and tractors and old muscle cars added to the gas when things get rough and it works 70% of the time cleaning the idle up etc...... I declined the Sea Foam which was $10 a bottle and went with my $5 bottle of Marvel. He said he has customers that swear by Sea Foam.

Anybody use Sea Foam and have good results ? If so how in your case do you use it - crank case , gas tank , apply via the brake booster vacuum line etc ?

LOVE Seafoam, I use it in all my cars. Just did a treatment on my 06 KJ yesterday. Sucked in 1/2 can and put the other 1/2 in the tank.
Ive never added it to my tank before, figured why save the other 1/2.
After sucking in a half, I let is sit for 10min then started it up and enjoyed the smoke show for a while, once the smoke died down I went off to the store (10 min drive)
when I got back home, I changed the plugs and oil/filter.
I noticed ?water? dripping from the tail pipe last night afetr warming it up at a friends house, this never happened before so I assume it was due to the 1/2 can i added to the 3/8 tank of gas.
The idle of the truck was instantly smoother and quieter. Yesterdays simple and cheap "tune-up" (under $60) really made a difference.

I've used in the tank, it helps with anti-gelling and getting any water out of the system, it will clean the gunk out and dissolve it so that it will go through the fuel filter and be burnt, instead of plugging the filter.
$10.00 a can is a rip off, I get mine at NAPA and it usually is $6.99 or less, and once in a while it goes on sale.
The smoke is only if you, run it through the intake, use to pour it down the carb's a long time ago, and it helped idle, but that was with leaded gas.

Should only have a smoke show if you have a lot of deposits. I tried it in our 94 I-6 and had zero smoke. Old corolla has a little but not much.

Before I knew about this stuff when I was 16 a mechanic friend told me to drain a quart of engine oil and put in a quart of ****** fluid and slowly pour water in the carb (a few cups). All of this while the engine was warm and not being driven around town cause of the ****** fluid in crankcase. When I had it rebuilt 6 months later there was no sludge and everything was clean. This was on a 73 ford 400M with about 140,000 miles driven by an old man who drove like a little old man.

Once I get some more miles on the kj I will give seafoam a try.

ATF in engine oil is not a good thing. I heard this for years as an antidote to tapping lifters in Chrysler engines. First of all it never worked and secondly you are risking oil shear. (losing film strength)

Water in the carb (or throttle body) will cut carbon deposits, just have to be careful as water does not compress.

I thought it was one and the same. But I can see how a little water would create enough pressure to stop the piston without breaking anything. I wonder how fine of a line it is between stalling and hydrolocking?

Moparman: I can not imagine driving it that way or letting it idle for more than 10 minutes or so because ATF does not have the properties needed for a healthy engine. For me it worked for cleaning sludge and some buildup.

OK, maybe I should say it never worked for me. You are right, it shouldn't stay in there, I always heard to do it right before an oil change. But unless the motor is old and burning oil I am wary of any sort of additive. P.S. I just noticed your location and posted on your other thread, Florida wouldn't have winter blend fuel, right? Although you did have winter weather...

Sea foam works great as mentioned, I have done some that had a great smoke show , others almost nothing. We did one at the Ohio M&G yesterday and not so much of a smoke show, but idled better afterwards even before swapping the plugs out.

Some of the old tricks mentioned above do not work well with newer engines.
If you have a Menards close by its only about 6 bucks a can. I have four or 5 here at any given time!

Throwing ATF in the crankcase or gas tank(makes a great octane booster) is a tried and true method for carbed engines.Do not use on newer FI engines as it will destroy the fuel system since ATF softens rubber and there's alot of rubber o-rings in your fuel system in a FI engine,same goes for acetone.

Oh and misting water from a spray bottle into a running engine with either a crab or FI does wonders also,works better with windshield washer fliud though and don't use to much,just mist in.

you can suck about a half can in through the vas hose going to the brake booster to stall the engine, let it sit and work and then restart
Makes a good mixer for 7 UP as well
