Greetings. This is my first post. :)

I've been considering buying a used Liberty lately, and I keep hitting a roadblock. I'm having a difficult time tracking down Liberties which have the Selec-Trac four-wheel-drive system.

It seems in most cases that the dealer/individual has no idea what I'm asking. And most listings I find never comment on it. I find myself looking only at online listings, and checking the pictures, and looking at the four-wheel-drive level, squinting as I check for the full-time/part-time options. I've also visited dealerships, and it's now the very first thing I check for through the window.

So I have a few questions now.

How prevalent is the Selec-Trac system on Liberties? Is this something that is rare, like 5%? Am I more likely to find Selec-Trac on Limiteds?

Is there any other/easier way for me to check for Selec-Trac?

Do any of you have any other tips that might help me track down what I'm looking for?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the website!

I am not entirely sure, so don't quote me, but I think Selec-Trac was optional on the Sport models and either standard or much more common on the Limiteds.

Limiteds

Thanks! :)

I actually was originally under the impression that all Limiteds came with the Selec-Trac system. This was proved false when I drove 45 minutes to a dealer with a Limited, only to find that it did not have the Selec-Trac system.

I've gotten some misinformation here and there, so that's why I came here. :)

Im under the impression that it was totaly random, despite the fact that certain models where supposed to have it for sure or not...

when i went shopping for my used LIBBY i would always look on the 4wd handle for 4 positions vs just 3, and if i couldnt tell from the photos, i would ask, most people selling can answer the question when put in those simple terms....

So just ask:

Does the 4wd lever have 4 positions or 3? Could you list the postions marked on that handle?

Selec-Trac was part of option package 29G on the Limiteds along with leather seats, overhead console and the Infinity speakers. At least for '06. I have it, but I have no idea of its prevalence in the market.

Thanks

Thanks, Russ. Any information is helpful. :)

On a side note, one of the dealers called back and described the handle to me. I told him that I wasn't interested, and he commented that he didn't understand why a person would choose to not buy a Liberty which didn't have Selec-Trac. He started into some tangent about how it's not needed, and how it doesn't matter above 35 MPH, etc. He then started quizzing me about my personal experience with four-wheel-drives.

I wonder if he realizes that ******* off a potential customer who is willing to immediately pay the full price in cash isn't the wisest course of action.

Anyway, moving on!

If anyone else has any additional information along these lines, or tips, please feel free to post. :)

Not useful at speeds above 35mph? What does that mean? Did you tell him that you cannot use 4wd on a hard road surface if it doesnt have Full Time? A part-time tcase should not be used on the road, wet or dry.

Most salesmen dont really have a clue what or how the 4wd works in a Jeep. They just want it sold and gone.

Thats like saying, "I cant understand why anyone would not buy a Jeep if it doesnt have a sunroof." Its going to be YOUR jeep, you should be able to get what you want! Stupid people.

I really felt the urge to explain all of that to him. However, I was waiting on other calls, so I bit my tongue, figuratively speaking.

After dozens of calls, I ended up finding only 1 Liberty (a 2 hour drive away), a Limited, which had the Selec-Trac system, but it was already sold.

This is proving more time-consuming than I thought it would be! :)

That's what sold me on my 2007 - I wanted a sport, select-trac, off-road pkg, and tow pkg. Also was hoping to find Jeep Green. I found it like 3 miles from where I work! The dealer didn't believe me that they had it in inventory, said they'd never order one like that. I showed him the window sticker I printed off from the Jeep inventory site.

I dont think it is all that common in sports
but mostly on Limited's
I have a question
Why the hard push for select trac?
IMO it leaves much to be desired ,mine tends to get stuck
like it is in part time 4wd when it should be in full time
not all the time but mostly when first shifted

and I still dont buy in to the "terror" that people have about 4wd on dry pavement
hell I know guys who are both welded and spooled and run that on dry pavement ,all it does is wear the crap out of tires
this is basically the same thing as 4wd and 2 open diff's
2 tires can not turn at the same speed
