Blend door sticking
I just bought an 02' Liberty. The A/C wasn't blowing cold air, but the compressor was running. The car dealer said is was the blend door motor, and I got him to replace it (or so he says) before I bought it. Now, about a month later (today actually) the A/C would only work when set of recirculate. When set to use outside air, it just got a lot warmer. Try putting your A/C on recirculate, and see if it blows cold air right away.
As I was driving home from work today, (when this problem first started). I remembered that the blend door motor and mechanism, was behind the glove box. So I opened the glove box, then slammed it closed. And then it was working properly again.
I suspect you have a sicking blend door motor/mechanism too.
Otherwise, by your description, it just sounds like your low on refrigerant. If the system gets low on refrigerant, a pressure sensor will not allow the A/C clutch to engage, until it builds up enough pressure. This is to avoid damaging your compressor, if it it low on refrigerant.
Could also be a faulty, low pressure sensor, but I doubt that.
Please try putting your A/C on the "recirculate" position, and see if you get cold air almost right away. Then I would definitely say it was a sticking blend door.
I have heard that these can be a real PIA to fix, because you have to take apart most of the dashboard, to access them. Good luck!
