So i thought id share a winter story with you guys.
yesterday i was driving on the country road and didnt think the roads were bad. so i went normal speed and to my luck they were bad. i wound up hitting a patch of ice doing 50 and it whipped three times. luckily i had control of it and landed in a ditch.
but the snow got so packed up on it none of the wheels spun. so i had to get help and tow it out.
heres some pics.

I just can't figure out why people think speed and adverse weather go together.

Just slow down when ice/snow is around. Especially when you think the roads are clear. That is when people wreck the worst. They think, "Oh, the road is clear here, it must be clear everywhere." Then they round a corner and wonder what happened when they hit a ditch.

That two minutes that you were trying to save turn into being 20 minutes late or not even getting there at all. Is it really worth the risk?

I don't mean to sound rude. I hope you don't take it that way.

I just pulled or watched too many people be out of ditches last week. I really just can't figure it out is all.

I see you have Goodyear Wrangler tires...no wonder you left the road and ended up in the ditch. Get rid of the CrappyYear tires and next time slow down;)

The road looks pretty clear to me.

Tires make a big difference though. I rode 50 miles in slush then 50 miles in packed snow and was able to maintain about 40-45 in the packed snow with my blizzaks. Very grippy even on snow. Luckily I was all by myself out there as it was late. Had other people been around I'd have slowed down to probably 30-35, mainly to not have to pass or give a false sense of security to them.

What made it spin around? Were you in a curve? Did you brake because you saw the ice? Normally if you go across ice and are going straight and just stay out of the gas pedal, it will remain straight.

Another thing I don't like to do on snow: cruise control. The libby especially loves to downshift and rev up in curves and slight inclines, scary.

x2. Those tires should be removed immediately upon purchase, IMO. Maybe not if it never rains or snows where you live, but even then they still suck.

It doesn't matter what tires you have on, if you hit ice going too fast, you are done. Even with new tires made for snow, it is best to maintain a slower speed during snow/ice fall and thaw periods.

Well going slow + good tires is better than slow + crappy tires. The different Wranglers that came on the KJ are all crap. It's one of the first things I changed when I bought my KJ.

I completely agree.

The Wranglers on mine were horrible. Getting rid of them was the absolute best thing I have done to my KJ yet.

Look at the bright side joshTazz, no real damage and you got some real winter Liberty Pictures!
Nice and white, what state is that, must be back east!
I know the stock tires are terrible, I use Good Year's but the Silent Armor's with a snow flake rating/kevalr belts, they are very good in snow, but ice is a whole caution flag for any tires, without studs.

Those aren't the factory tires.

They're trackers, which are still not any good, but the point is you didn't know that. Tired of seeing your anti-Goodyear propaganda, simply because the OEM tires that come on vehicles are junk. Newsflash - NOT ONE VEHICLE ON EARTH COMES WITH GOOD TIRES FROM THE FACTORY, with very few exceptions.

I'm sure the state of Michigan paid millions to think of this but " Ice and Snow take it slow"

I am anti-Goodyear indeed. All the Goodyear tires I've come across with were absolute crap. I will admit that they make a few good tires(duratrac, silentarmor) but overall they make more crappy tires than good tires. Go on Tirerack and check out the tires at the bottom of each category. All goodyear.

Well, these aren't truck tires, but go check out tirerack and see what the rating is on Goodyear Eagle GT tires. One of the best I've owned for a compact sports car!

Also, what about the Goodyear Wrangler MT/R's? I've not heard anything bad about them, except they're expensive as heck!

Speed will have a bigger factor on the ice than the GY tires. I drive to Whistler, BC (a place known for a little snow and Ice) every year and while I no longer have the GY tires, I used to and as long as you keep your speed in check and keep it in 4hi, you should suffer few problems.

So does Firestone
So does Bridgestone
So does (insert almost any other company here)

The point is that it's not the Goodyears, because this has happened to ThunderbirdJunkie too, and ThunderbirdJunkie DOES NOT own crap tires. Ice=no traction, REGARDLESS of tires.
