I'm new to the forum and have been thinking a while about the 2006 LIberty CRD. I've been driving diesels for years and really don't want to Go back to gas. I currently own a vw beetle diesel and a vw Touareg v10 diesel. I need something cheap and something that is easier to work on (rarely, I hope.) And something that is less expensive to maintain.
I dont know the first thing about jeep so I'm hoping some of you could help me decide on what to get. I must have the CRD, no gas for me. I'd also like the Limited package because I really like leather and options.

Are there any options that are rare but highly desired like a diff locker or something that is available but is hard to add later? I don't wanna kick myself later because I missed something.

Jeep Cherokee are rattleboxes that fall apart . Is the Liberty the same or is it more durable and dependable?

Thanks for any help.

Scratch all of that for a CRD,better have deep pockets and alot of spare time on your hands.Good luck finding parts also,the common stuff can take 2-4 months of waiting to get if you can get it at all.

Better off buying a gas KJ,much more reliable but like all vehicles has it's small issues but nothing major unlike the CRD's.

like stated above
you also will be let down by the relatively poor MPG ~25 hwy
better off sticking with the VW if you want a small diesel vehicle

CRDs, are fine as long as they are running, less then 20% of the owners have problems with them, of course that will go up as time goes by. If you are handy with tools, and have money and other vehicles to drive, you will be OK with a CRD. Just make sure you get a GDE tune done to it.

Id love to have a CRD myself. My girl friends family has one with ~140k on it and as far as I know, theyve replaced the turbo. Dont believe theyve done a single thing other than that, that includes not replacing the timing belt which they need to do badly.

I just LOVE how the gasser owners always give advice on CRD's. Have some CRD's had problems sure. I have one with over 69,000 miles and Ive done nothing to mine save change the oil. The previous owner changed the torque converter but he only did that as a preventative. He didnt have to.

There is nothing wrong with these engines/trucks.

Take care of your vehicle and hit will take care of you.

Mine regularly got 30+ MPG highway. Dunno where you're getting 25 from.

Because I used to wheel with 2 owners who both complained of 25 AVERAGE
which is piss poor for a diesel that small
considering that Ford/Dodge/GM 3/4 and 1 ton trucks average 16-18 highway
and have 3 times the engine then even 30 is piss poor

Diesels need oil changes and maintenance but generally last a long time because they are built heavier. Yes, the v10 was sold from 04-08. Pretty rare but you can find them.

Oh Noooo. A Diesel vs Gas thread :pp::happy175:

To all fellow 'gassers' : 'Diesel' is a religion...... There's absolutely no way of making them change their mind!

Much like the stick vs auto issue..... ( I go for auto :) )

I admit diesels use less fuel per mile (sounds good) ... but please, not in a Jeep!!!

Since you've had TDI's this is less expensive to maintain, the headlights are a lot cheaper to replace than a beetle. The top LTD has the leather and a few have the navigation which I think are rare. Since it's going to be used look for the lowest mileage one and one that has been maintained, have the vin number ran to see that all the recalls have been done. Since you've had diesels you know how to treat them so a good one will run you a long time.

Yeah, and consider your self lucky if your gasser Liberty gets as good of mileage as a pick up truck, cause that gasser likes to really drink the fuel :drink_nl:

And in the mean time I will stick with my 28 MPG CRDs :gr_grin:

What I know
3.7L KJ 21 highway ,mine
CRD KJ 28 highway ,2 others

Fact based on above and today's fuel cost
3.7 = $.140 per mile @ $2.95 ($2.949)
CRD = $.114 per mile @ $3.20 (3.199)

3.7 = $14,000 in fuel to go 100k miles
CRD = $11,400 in fuel to go 100k
$2,600 in savings will go away real fast
When you consider that the CRD will out the gate
cost nearly that much more if you can even
find 1 then there are the repair cost

Unless I am missing something?

What I know:

People who do not personally own this vehicle, or have not previously owned this vehicle should not comment, because every time they do, it ends up turning into a Gas vs. Diesel thread that usually ends up violent and closed.

30MPG for a vehicle that weighs 4300lbs, can tow 5000lbs (and people have tried much, much more, with success), can carry a ton of cargo... is excellent for its size. My 30MPG number was loaded with 3 passengers, and all the crap that comes along with them.

With that being said, this is not a start-and-go-anywhere-you-want type vehicle. It is more of a "hobby". There's certain things that you must do (Racor/Lift Pump/GDE Tune, Suncoast Torque Converter) to make this thing reliable.

But usually, after that, it's a dang good Jeep.

Yeah missing a few items..........

Cost twice as much to do a oil change,fuel filter changes needced at least every year,and a $1000+ timing belt change at 100K that the 3.7 never needs.Plus got to add in the cost of tunes,aftermarket TC's,SEGR's,and other things just so it runs right.Then you got to add in the cost of down time when it breaks and your waiting 2+ months for parts that are very expensive due to shipping from Italy.

All in all I'll take my 10mpg less per mile gas KJ,cheaper to maintain and can find parts anywhere for less $$$.Oh and a better reliabilty then the CRD by far.

I've worked on a few,and have driven them.Gotta say less then impressed by them.

I do like diesels,just in a 3/4ton+ pickup.

You are missing that the CRD is an awesome vehicle that pulls like a tractor and will easily blow away the high revving low torque 3.7. I never took out a calculator on any vehicle I ever owned. I own it because I want to.

Looks like you spent plenty to make that Orange KJ what you wanted it to be? Why does any one worry about what a CRD owner Might? have to spend to own the vehicle they want? The OP wants a CRD, not a bunch of negative anti CRD responses.

All my mods are for offroad,the engine and trans are 100% stock,all original factory parts besides fluids,filters,and spark plugs.No mods needed to make the engine last 250,000+ miles,unlike a CRD where big amounts of $$$ are needed just to make it to 100k.
