Hi, I am doing a water pump this weekend. I encountered the pits on the surface. I have the jb weld setting up on the pits now. I have a new mopar pump with gasket. I really don’t want to do this again as long as I own the vehicle. I know it’s not supposed to have sealant but wondered if anyone ever just put a thin bead like 1/16 inch along only the outside edge of the rubber gasket? Not talking about filling the oring groove or anything like that. Just a little extra protection along the outside edge of factory gasket. It was only seeping some and I think the jb pit filling has been done before on this one. I have some ultra grey high Torque ready but I have no experience with what to do and not to do here . Thanks

Thanks. I did a tiny bead on outside of oring style gasket. I’ll report In a few months if I regret it. It seems if there are pits on the gasket surface, a little extra something may be needed, plus the fact I was re sealing seeps from the last time the jb weld pit filling was done at some point in the past. I haven’t owned it long.

Not exactly related to your question, but I noticed in your pictures that your pump impeller appears to be nylon. Did you replace the pump because it was leaking, or did you have overheating problems also? Reason I ask is that my 2002 had a random overheating issue once, and the problem turned out to be the nylon impeller slipping on the pump shaft. I would have never found this, except my pump also had a small leak, which made me change it. The pump change fixed the leak and the random overheating issue, which I thought was related to the thermostat but wasn’t. I have heard of others finding a slipping nylon impeller, after a pump change, and I’ve noticed many of the replacement pumps seem to have an aluminum impeller, so I’m wondering if the nylon impellers are a known problem. If you still have your old pump, I’d be curious if you can twist the impeller on the shaft, while holding the pulley side.

I wasn’t having any overheating issues, just several trails of intermittent pink poking out around the pump face. The impeller on the one I took off was ok, I think was original. The new mopar pump was the same with plastic impeller. I figured this seeping would turn into leaking, and my daughter is driving this Jeep and I was trying to avoid “gauge was on the h but I just kept driving” Scenario

Didn’t take long after fixing all of that, for my radiator to get a small leak on the front side of the upper hose inlet . When doing the pump I did the res tank, t stat, upper and lower hoses as preventive maintenance but of course the next one popped up now

5000 mile update, seems ok and holding well as related to adding a little sealant on the outside of the gasket. By design it’s not supposed to have sealant but I had some pitting etc to deal with. I think the main point is to make sure sealant doesn’t squeeze to the inside of the gasket and then could potentially get into the water stream if any ever broke loose

There isn't an issue using RTV in addition to the gasket. You have a good point thats its never a good idea to use too much RTV. People have been using only RTV in similar situations for many years and most often use too much, typically there isn't an issue.

I do believe that the pitting is from overdue antifreeze changes.
