Sorry I'm super late to this!!! 4xguard can take a real beating for the sliders. I have a 2ft long gash in mine to prove it. Only problem is that they fit tight to the rockers for you

That looks painful. (To the wallet and the psyche, fortunately not physically.)

It warms my heart to see the good advice and help the pros here are offering. At least you're in the right place to get this taken care of the right way. :waytogo:

Ok thanks. I dont mind bashing the destroyed rocker in enough to fit the new one. I dont really il be doing any more damage. Ill spray everything with a rust inhibitor and bolt a new rocker over top. Seems like it is an upgrade over the stock rocker so I will probably go that route.

The advice has all been a big help, I sincerely appreciate all the responses.

Eh, I've fixed worse. You're lucky the damage stayed on the rocker. However you fix it, make sure it's sealed up well from the weather. Letting the elements pack in there will rust the inner rocker area in no time. If you don't go the rock slider route, then a replacement rocker panel is cheap, under $30 plus shipping: Jeep Liberty 02-07 Slip-on Rocker Panel 4 Door
Buying a panel is the easy part. But cutting-welding-grinding-filling-priming and finish paint can be done in less than a weekend.

Those are the exact panels I bought :waytogo:

I've done a test fit and they will work nicely. They're slightly longer than necessary but the ends are 90 degrees instead of the slightly radiused ends on the OEM rockers. But a little trimming, a couple coats of weld-through primer, POR15 on the inside and they're ready to go.

NOTE: They have Canadian sales section on their site so KJ604 you're good to go!

So I've always been wondering how those 4xguard skids mount. I've had rust issues on the rocker in the past and want to replace the rocker all together this seems like it'd be a good option

That would depend on how long you plan on keeping your Jeep. The skids can hide the rust as a temporary "fix". That will last until the rust finally creeps up and around to the top of the door sill.

Bolts to the pinch weld like so. Then just tap screws along the top.

PS: as you can see mine are abused and holding up haha

Well the plan was to just cut out the rocker take care of the rust underneath and put the skids in place

Don't forget our Liberty is a unibody, the rocker panels add to the body/frames rigidity. If you're going to cut the outer rocker completely away, then you might as well weld the skids to the body.

I may do that seeing as how if the rust got bad enough I was gonna weld in a piece of rectangular tube steel

You do know it is not the sme width all the way from front to back , right?
So if you just welded in square tubing one end would stick out more than the other a little, plus there is bracing in behind as well

I know, which is why I said I was going to do that as in past tense. Now that I know the 4xguard cover the rockers I'm gonna go with them instead

im still on the fence. i could just buy the rocker panel myself as suggested and then just get a body shop to weld that in. so im in the range of 12-1500 there. and then the body is fixed properly.

and I realize the KJ is a unibody. so sure we can say I lost some strength there by tearing open the sheet metal. but how much strength do you think I really will have lost there? And if bolting a sheet of steel from the sill to the pinch weld would that not be adding some strength back in?

i can see both sides of the argument and I cant decide between the two.

the 4xguards are a nice upgrade IMO but the only way they make sense financially is if I don't get the rocker panel fixed and just bolt them over top. now Im definitely OCD and trust me I will never forget that that rocker panel is #$%&ed up under there if I just put the new ones over top. but I would still be paying less to upgrade both rockers than i would be paying just to get one fixed.

But I guess the question is. Is the jeep really THAT much weaker because that body panel is broken, even with a new rocker bolted over top?

Plenty of the XJ guys are missing rocker panels and those are an even weaker uniframe. I'd say it's very negligible.
