Given the sludge issues these engines have I would be reluctant to leave any kind of oil in them for more than 4000 miles.
I thought sludge issues went away in the late 80's early 90's????

Odd, I run a shop, do dozens of oil changes weekly, and use the cheapest filter (not necessarily the sorriest) and oil I keep in stock in my personal Chevy Silverado SS. That's a Chinese made filter, "ProGauge", and Phillips66 semi synthetic oil. Trucks got 242,*** miles and is always full at 3,500 mile change time (that is if I don't go over 4k because of neglect). This is a high output, premium fuel only 6L engine I run the azz of of.
But go ahead and pay for the name brands and all their advertising if it makes you feel better.

Well when I can crush a filter with my bare hands, the filter gasket falls off, and the fact that they straight up explode or expand within the 3k OCI, I refuse to use that garbage. Go ahead and keep using em if you want but I sure as hell won't trust my vehicle with anything from chinkyland.
PS: I'm also a certified technician and see these things on the regular
Such wisdom from one so young!
I can crush a beer can with my bare hands (after it's empty, at least). Never seen that as a reason to quit drinking beer.

I Normally Stock up on Mobile 1 (i Use it for my Evo) So i could just stick with using Mobile products if a lot of you have had good luck with them. I've been considering trying out the Castrol GTX as well, seems like a lot of you use that as well.
And just because you "run" a shop and are older than me doesn't mean anything. A well built oil filter will not crush like your cheap ass ***** ones. Ever here of the countless JiffyLube filter problems from running inferior china made filters?
You may be right. It's been a long time since I was "young" enough to not realize how little I know.
UUummmm,,, no, JiffyLube not much of a player here in the South. WalMart and their wonderful Made In USA Frams seem to fill that market.
LeeAnn, when the young pups with their spanking new, shiny certifications tell me how an automotive enterprise that's been under the same management, in the same location, serving up to 4 generations of the same families is doing it wrong, yes I do tend to get a bit cranky.

Ahhhh...... no, you need to change oil in these engines or they will sludge up and die....
Here is a link where you can see the result of neglected oil changes:

Steve, why 5W-20, or did you mean 5W-30?:hmm:
Gotta love oil threads!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Has oil come along way in the last 20 years? Yep
Can you run it longer then 3k? Yep
Should you run it longer then 3k? Nope
Why?
Cause over complicated emission systems and "thin" oil(that would be 5w-20 and thinner) lead to oil consumption. Also newer engines run much hotter then older engines.
Call me young and inexperienced but been in the field and Master certified for almost 20 years now.I'm not a mechanic,I'm a technician and yes there is a major difference.I don't even got 1000 miles sometimes on my oil changes,I do mine by time now, every 6 months(average 2k in that time on both my vehicles).I use Vavoline 5w-30 non-syn in my KJ now with Mobil 1 filter and Mobil 1 syn 5w-30 in the Town Car with Mobil 1 filter.
Here is your extended OCI's(10k OCI's and 100k on engine) using Castrol GTX and Fram oil filters, and no the intake gaskets were not leaking, engine was torn down due to 3qts of oil added brought the oil level to "full".

Just did mine last weekend with Quaker State Full Synthetic 5W-20 and a Mopar filter. The old oil (not done by me) had 4,000 miles on it, longest I've ever gone on the same oil for any car I've ever owned. It was full synthetic as well and was rated for 7,500 miles. It was also black as ink when I drained it out. I've been checking the new oil every day this week and am enjoying the nice honey-bronze color. I may be wasting money by doing it ahead of schedule, but it's still cheaper than a new engine.
