Ok. I am having a whine while driving. I can literally let off gas and it goes quite then press on the gas and it comes back. Sounds like some fresh mid grapples almost, kinda high pitch. Will do it some when decelerating. Sometimes on slowing down it gets super loud. I'll two gas and it will go back to regular whine. No shifting problems. Drives normal except the noise. Without radio on it can be annoying. Any idea? Just bought the Libby a month ago. Don't know anything bout it really. It has fresh tired and trans fluid looks clean. I can try to load a video to YouTube if i need to.

It seems to be some common problem, when I had mine I learned to live with it and never could figure out if it was coming from the front are since I had 2WD. Or if it was the rear differential. I had heard from a couple Jeep Gurus that this was a common ''Jeep Thing'' for some reason.

My wife whines the entire time she's in my Jeep because it makes her Sea Sick (Steve - For Mudd), so I don't hear any whine from the Jeep. I've learned to tune most whines out...

Sounds to me like the intermediate shaft on the front differential. On the passenger side there is a shaft that comes from the front diff out to the CV axle - the splines on the end will wear and it will create a whine or hum like you're experiencing.

Not a difficult replacement - CactusJacked has a pic of his old worn part compared to the new one he put in.

So I just stuck my finger in the rear diff hole. Got dark gray gunk on my finger but didn't touch any fluid. My finger went about 1.5" in the hole. I have gear oil at the house. Will add some when i get home.

Sorry - forgot you have a 2WD.

I wouldn't add more gear oil till you know what's in there. Get too much pressure and it will blow out the breather hose.

So I added gear oil. No help. Trans fluid is full and red. But there were a lot of bubbles on dip stick.

If it really was bone dry, the damage may have been done.

Where in the Jeep does it sound like the noise is coming from? Front or rear?

I can't tell where it's coming from. I guess this weekend I'll jack it up and run it to see if I can pin point it.
