I just noticed the Arizona Republic is running this article on desert dumping.

I definitely agree that this is a significant problem which all of us are responsible for. However, I do know that the AZ Republic is becoming increasing liberal and would love to shut down many open areas. This should serve as a reminder to all of us as enthsiasts to keep our areas the way the way they were when we got there.

This is a beautiful country and the deserts of the southwest especially have a unique beauty. Unfortunatly it is the easiest place to litter since so much of it is unpopulated. It will hurt everybody if these areas are closed to public use.

We have recycle centers that will take most things free. The Town I live in will pick up anything recyclable several times a year free (well - it actually comes out of your taxes). I know it is only a small town with 1,833 people (per last census) but if they can do it any one can if they have a will to. There's still places here where you find trash in the woods though but I have to believe it would be much worse otherwise.

The people that do this ought to be flogged with 2x4's and cinder blocks. Sorry but that's my feeling on the subject.

Organize a clean up run. Cleans up the environments and makes a good name for 4 wheelers

DesertKJ, if you want to help out go to virtualjeepclub.com and join the Arizona Virtual Jeep Club (AZVJC). They are regularly shceduling cleanups in the area - they had one today out at the Saguaro Lake coves and there is one next month out at Table Mesa. Here is another article about the problem, there is a brief mention of the AZVJC efforts near the bottom. I know in the past they have pulled everything up to and including burned out vehicles out of some of these sites. I'm planning on going out to TM if I can get the day off.

I'd like to when I get some time. That would definitely be for a good cause.

KJ WEST adopted a trail in the San Bernadino mtn's and we staged a clean up there recently. We hauled two full size truck bed loads and a dozen trash bags of garbage off the trail and only managed to do a small portion of the trail. Unfortunately, that particular trail is not too tough at the beginning and many people travel it to access the lake it is near.
W will be going back again to get the rest of it soon. Hopefully others will stop dumping there.
Ask the BLM office in your area if the do trail adoptions and then organize a group to take care of it.

It's just sad that people have to trash their neighborhoods, and then go out and trash our public lands. I have heard environmentalists say that they would like to see humans banded from national forests for good, and use this as a reason. Living here in the Midwest, it's amazing how much trash I see along the roads, and even in my own recently new neighborhood. I did have an old co-worker that said that she spent some time in Mexico after college and how people throw everything out the window of their cars as that's just normal for them, so at least we aren't that bad. But it still bugs me too.

A guy I knew told me that when you go to the woods, always take the time to stop and pick up at least some trash that you see, as we can all make a difference by doing so. So I try and carry a trash bag with me at all times.
