Somewhere between being sane and insane!
In the pic below is another way to determine if you have the 45RFE.The two yellow circles are the 45RFE trans cooler lines, and only KJ's with the 45RFE has that ****** cooler in the raditor(don't mind the extra lines,I added a aux trans cooler in mine).

No I didn't. I'm saying that there is NO shroud if you don't have the tow package. Only the fan is under the hood.

Perfect example. My '04 KJ. No shroud... just the fan. What I should have said is that the big shroud is not supposed to be..... there lol3.gif

Then what's the big plastic cover behind the radiator that says "CAUTION FAN"? ;) I am calling the cover over the fan a shroud. I think that's where we are getting confused. I understand it's most likely one piece with the fan, but in my book, it's a fan schroud.

OK, if you wanna call it a fan shroud, then it's a fan shroud. (Yes it is one piece with the fan.)

OK, I think we're done here. :p

my 04 with the fan shroud. When new, it did not have the towing pack or offroad pack.

According to your pic's you have the ps cooler and the ****** cooler. You also have the ****** controller on the passenger side fender which is for the 45rfe. That is what I see in the pic's you posted. Look on the side of the ******. There should be a tag on it. The ****** pan is square on that ****** I think also.

Correct.

Ive towed a small 15" bass boat (around 2500-3k) no problems and I do not have the engine driven fan. You will have no problems with your current setup if you have a hitch.

i think my local dealer's an idiot. i have no place in the rad where the lines used to be. looks like a non auto rad. my ****** lines have something over them where they go threw to the trans cooler...i'm guessing its so they can't rub togather.

according to the guys over at lostkjs, some of the earlier 42rle setups had the setup like mine having the seperate tcm and pcm. they said to look at the ****** and see if its stamped with rle or rfe and something to do with the ****** pan gasket. i guess to them thats the only true way to tell what ****** i have??

From the "AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - 45RFE/545RFE" service manual.

TRANSMISSION IDENTIFICATION

Transmission identification numbers are stamped
on the left side of the case just above the oil pan
sealing surface (Fig. 1). Refer to this information
when ordering replacement parts. A label is attached
to the transmission case above the stamped numbers.
The label gives additional information which may
also be necessary for identification purposes.

If you are willing to go under, you will find the info on the label or you will see the info stamped on the housing. This must be the ultimate method... I can't think in anybody seeking further confirmation after doing this... :D
