this is news. That means they used the old computer on the 42rle, so you cant just look at that anymore and tell what ****** you have.

This is why I almost never believe anything that people say other places.

So basically, for at least 5 months, from January to May, they were just tossing whatever transmission they had inside the Libertys. If they got a 42RLE, they put it in there. If they got a 45RFE, they put it in there.

That leads me to believe that the reason why they started using the 42RLE was.... scarce supply of the 45RFE.

Unless we're all sorely mistaken and they switched over much earlier than May...

Marlon.....this is most likely true. And then it would be hit and miss as to which ****** you got through May of 03 or whatever. The only way we could know for sure then, is if one of us knew someone who was working on the KJ assembly line in Toledo during 02 and 03.

Oh, and I wanted to say that I know the 45RFE is heavier duty but I havn't heard of all kinds of ****** failures with the 42RLE so it seems like it is doing a good job handling the 3.7L torque. I have done some towing with mine and have no issues with it. I do lock out O/D when towing though.

Well... I went below of my KJ and look carefully at the ****** and I realized that I have a 42RLE... I was also fooled by the separate PCM and TCM. I came into doubts when I realized that a 45RFE shouldn't have a separate auxiliary ****** cooling from factory... but only I put all together when I reviewed the "I just hit 70,000 miles" thread and saw the speed comparison between the 42RLE and the 45RFE... I have been getting the same speed at the same RPM's that the 42RLE...

The setup would go Radiator, electric fan, auxiliary mechanical fan from the front to the back. It's hard to see the electric one in there if you have the mechanical one. The mechanical would be easy to see, it'd be attached to a pulley on the water pump on the front of the engine, and I believe mine has whitish opaque blades? Could be wrong on that.

You are right... This morning I looked in detail and found the electric fan, and like you, the mechanical fan has "whitish/yellowish" opaque blades...

You must be registered for see images

So thats means that I have the Off-Road Group and the Trailer Tow Group (w/o the most important, but also the most easy to get: the hitch).

So, the thing should be like this for the '03 model:

Skid Plate Group: Engine Skid Plate, Gas Tank Skid Plate, Transfer Skid Plate. (changes for other years)

Off-Road Group: Trac-Lok differential, P235/70R16 SR-A OWL A/T tires, Skid Plate Group.

Trailer Tow Group:
Heavy-duty engine cooling (big fan shroud and an extra mechanical fan) with auxiliary oil cooler for automatic transmission, power steering cooler, clase III trailer hitch (which is the only thing of above that I don't have :D).

You dont get an extra ****** cooler with anything if you have the 42rle. It came on every liberty that had the 42 rle.

Most you can get is the bigger shroud, engine driven fan, and a power steering cooler.

My Jeep didnt some with the towing pack or offroad pack but it still has the bigger shroud. No engine driven fan though.
