I replied to my original thread, but I guess it's in the archives because it didn't bump to the front page.

The long short of the story is, I own a '05 Liberty, 3.7L AT. It caught fire weeks after I bought it and roasted the wiring in the engine compartment.

I picked up a wiring harness off an '04 Liberty from eBay a couple weeks ago, but it didn't fit. It only had 3 ECM plugs, whereas mine has 4. I found another harness from an '07 3.7L 2wd AT and the price is right, but I don't have physical access to the donor vehicle. It's ECM looks identical to mine in the pictures though. Can anyone help me determine if this harness would be compatible, or explain the model year differences and what harnesses WOULD be a direct swap?

Thanks a bunch for any help you guys can provide.

The computers are different between the '02-'04 and the '05 through '07 model years. Your best bet would be to find the same model year as yours and I can't say with certainty whether an '06 or '07 would fit (though I'm pretty sure they would be compatible.)

What I CAN say for sure is that anything prior to '05 will not fit and of course the KK models starting in '08 are not compatible either. The one you found should be pretty close.

Another option is mentioned in this thread regarding swapping in a 4.7 (scroll down to post #79.) What you'll find in that thread is the web address for a company that will create or modify a harness to fit your vehicle. May be more than you're willing to spend but the harness they came up with looks great.

You should return that wiring harness.

You need an 05-06 wiring harness.

If he has an 05 he should get one from a 05 some of the wiring is different in the 05's and 06's

Yep, a fair amount of changes made in 2006 like changing to a CAN bus from a PCI bus. And the gassers use "PCMs" while the CRD uses an "ECM"...just a technicality:icon_biggrin:

If the fire was only in the engine bay itself I would consider fixing it up..not too difficult with the Service manuals as posted above.

wasn't 04-05 CAN/PCI hybrid? 04+should all be NGC rather than JTEC....damn that interchange!

Thanks for all of the input. I haven't purchased that 07 harness and probably won't gamble on it now. I'll hunt down a used 05 harness or save for a new one. Whichever I can manage first....

This kj was practically given to me, so I'll absolutely throw some bucks and a little effort into fixing it up. It's still a bit nerve racking not knowing exactly what caused the fire in the first place, though.

The same thing happened in my 05 Jeep Liberty Renegade. I replaced the harness with an identical one taken from the same model. I just picked it back up yesterday and now it is overheating to the point of causing the water to boil in the radiator reservoir which it did not do before, changed the cap on it and it was fine for a few hours. It has now started to make strange popping noises and backfiring and cutting back to the point I no longer feel safe driving it. I hope the same does not happen to you. And I am horribly sorry that you had to go through your jeep catching fire and not knowing why, I know it scared me pretty bad myself.
