No surprise the Deltics were put in loco-motives.
Grab that head, it's a bargain. Many warp and crack from insufficient warm-ups.
Turbos usually get killed from insufficient spin-down when parked. The oil supply line gets coked up from heat transferance and then there's no oil supply. If it's screaming as you walk away it won't live long. Excessive end play is the best indicator of a turbo with a bad future.
Do you know about the fan-shroud modification? Basically cut on both sides so there's a top and bottom half. I have pictures of my version on the forum somewhere. Just makes it easier to work on without bonking the fan against the radiator.
Might want to grab the engine computer out of the junk jeep although it might need a dealer computer to get your jeep to accept it.
Also grab the big serpentine belt idler-pulley/bracket assembly and harmonic balancer since they are becoming rare.

Thanks mate....after the whiskey lol, and nights sleep, I'm now refreshed enough to start.
I recon I will do a compression test first, as the head will take over a week to arrive. Unsure if you are aware, but over here we are in complete lockdown because of the Covid 19 threat. A new law has been brought in and basically, unles going to the store for esential needs or to work ONLY if you cannot work from home, then we get fined! 2 have already been in the news being fined 650 each! Ouch!
Couriers and the like are bombed out with work so stuff is taking ages.
Way I see it, is the guy said he would hold it for 4 days, (Kind of him like but I have bought lots off him before so he knows I am genuine) so I may as well do the normal checks first. I cant see how the injector can get clobbered as only the very tip (1/16th" if that), sticks out the head hole looking at the drawing. I may be wrong. So, taking them all out today, get a comp check done and if all is OK on that side, I can get the injectors sorted. As I said, the noise does not sound like a cam or crank knock, more a diesel knock. I also suspect, now you and Bill have sent me up the right path, that an injector may have fallen apart inside and is over fueling a cylinder. Is that possible on these?
The other thing then would be to get those horrible glow plugs out! (Not looking forward to that).
I say all this, as it starts first time still (So bloody annoying I cured this bit), runs fairly sweet on tickover (still heavy smoke mind) and the fact I got home at 30-40 MPH without cutting out.

Ok finally got the injectors our....what an **** of a job!
I have also removed the cam cover.
No signs of damage to the valves, all seem a ok and the compression test confirmed my thoughts.. hopefully.
So back to the injectors....
They were as clean as a whistle as a couple of weks back I put some injector cleaner in the tank just to help with its annual test and emissions check.
However... No 4, when giving them a quick wipe, I notice the tip was pretty loose. So, socket in hand and injector in vice, managed 6 whole turns before it even started to tighten so seems bvious to me that this one has been pouring fuel into the bore rather than spraying it.
All going back together tomorrow, so hopefully that's it.

Forgot to add,
The deltic run railway engines are still going strong so yuuup, no wonder.
Ref the fan cover mod, I cut mine right at the bottom so it parts there. Better than stripping the bloody lot. I have also slighty modified a 13mm socket to get at the bolt behind the viscous fan. Thats a swine to get off so ground one down lol.

I played the stereo, until it broke.
Tips for getting the cam cover back on without going off your rockers. Cut the heads off a couple of tall bolts and use them as locating pins placed on centerline in the cam cover bolt holes near cylinders 1 and 3. Use some pieces of plastic tubing to hold the heavy lump away from the rockers until it's in position. I used electrical conduit, 19mm inside diameter initially, and then 13mm inside diameter to lower it. Four of them, about 2" long. You can peek in and make sure the rockers all still in place before lowering the cam cover. Dabs of assembly lube help hold them in place.
Don't reuse the head bolts, once "stetched" they're junk. Many switch to ARP head studs. They can be swapped in one at a time if the head isn't coming off. Torque to 130'# around the cylinders, and 120'# around the outer perimeter... opinions vary. The tightening sequence in the book is deviously labeled BS so don't just trust a glance at the picture.
Some recommend replacing the exhaust valves whenever you see them since they have a history of breaking.

Thanks for the tip, just about to put the lid back on. I have some dowels that will fit in the centre holes, thats a brill idea! I was sat looking at it thinking bloody hell......how do I keep these buggers stil!

You fella's have been brilliant in advising me all the time and actually taking the time to research in places I would never know about and for someone you don't know as such, is very humbling, so once again, a big thank you.
Although frustrating, I have quite enjoyed it and up till now, still am. Its years since I was in the trade and as such have missed the challenges and the tinkering. Engines nowadays are so complex its untrue, but these, although in some ways complex, they still have a certain amount of simplicity you can bugger around with. If you consider I paid 300 quid for it, when they go for around 1500, the time and money spent is nothing. I think my spend so far is about 250 quid! Mainly thanks to you guys as I have not gone daft buying things I cleary didn't or don't need.
Sometimes the end result gives a sense of achievement and the perseverence pays off. I've been doing other bits and bobs in between, like making Patio Heaters from junk gas cyliders and old washing machine drums, just to keep circulating. I recon I have spent more money on mig wire making them! Making new back plates for the hand brake was a sod, but again, using some old skills and buffing them up again has been brill.
Believe it or not, when I was 16, I used to volunteer at a local steam railway museum and was actually passed off as a driver following lots of very serious exams and tests. We hd to assist the chief engineer in stripping the locos, making parts where we could on lathes, milling machines and the like. My Granddad was also a toolmaker, so it must without doubt, be in my blood stream and DNA.
I am now a safety director in the nuclear industry so you can imagine going back to my roots as a clanky, has been brilliant. Although my bones and back may dissagree!
We have, this AM, recieved a letter from No 10 Downing Street and Mr Boris, telling us this will continue for some time and WE MUST STAY AT HOME OR FACE FINES AND OR ARREST! Blunt as that. When you consider the poor sod is, himself, in intensive care at the moment, this proves that no one person is exempt from it. Doesn't matter who you are, Covid has no prejudice! Just be careful mate, over here at least, I can tell you it is real and certainly no 'Nothing Burger'. Like I think you may be though, we are quite lucky in so far as we live in a very small villiage in the middle of nowhere (approx 20 residents) who are not linked together except their gardens. Nothing has changed for us really apart from talking to them from about 10 foot away and having a pint in the garden over the fence again about 20 feet away. So yeh, funny times.

May have dropped a wee clanger here. She is tring to fire on her own BUT, like a complete dipstick, I never labled the injector plugs. Does anyone havethe wire coolour coding? I have a feeling I have the back 3 muddled up as I do know No 1 is correct as I broke the plug catch pulling it off. Also the cam sensor one is also correct as this is one I repaired.

Sorted.......got 2 & 3 wrong way round.
No 4 is peeing diesel out around the seal so will sort that. Smoke is no where near what it was and the smell of parrafin has gone completely as has the heavy knock. So so far an albeit small result.
Turbo arrived today and looks pretty good so whilst I have half the bits away Im gonna get on with that after fixing the injector. I think I haven't put a new copper seal in, although I thought I had....bought 4 used 4. Ach well, No 4 has been a pain in the ass from day one anyway. Had to rethread that swine as the bolt just span and popped the bugger out some time ago now. Will sort but cheezing that it doesn't seem as major as I thought......may be famous last words but lets see. I can't have that much more bad luck with it for gods sake! he he he he he he.
At least Im still smiling and happy tinkering, learning and getting covered in sh 1 t ....goooood stuff eh?

Turbo bolts are often replaced with studs and nuts since they stay stuck so well.
There's a tool for dressing the injector seats on the cam cover but it sounds like you know your issues with #4. Always the hardest to reach. It's a counterbore or something like that. An expensive gadget mine didn't need but I'll check my notes and let you know if I find it. Not usually needed.
Steam locomotives are magic. Look into Abom79 on youtube. He's a third generation machinist who tours railroad shops and other places. You'll feel at home. My lathe was built in Colchester, brought in to the US by Clausing to fill a gap between small and huge. Still puttering with my cam locating pins since I'm too cheap to buy them. Good practice and fun.

Like an old motorcycle almost everything is out where you can see it. Nothing extra.
Worked on timing my jeep today... The smart guy must have been out sick when they designed that vague bunch of hogwash. Tempted to just pin the pulleys to the cams. All that floppy nonsense just to compensate for tooth wear on the rubber band. I'll give it a last look tomorrow and torque it. Then it's just a pile of parts to put back before I can ban it from my shop.
My notes on centerbores are for cleaning the head where the headbolts make contact: 15/32" pilot by 7/8" diameter. I have another in my notes that's probably for the injectors: 1/4" pilot with 7/8" diameter. Injector measures 7mm on the tip end and 17mm where it seats, give or take a little.
And my lathe quit so I did too. Probably an unhappy safety switch somewhere. Personally I feel safer when I don't have to hunt for the electrons.

A true stker like me then....NICE ONE! I was liuck enough back in 2016 to spend a week on the USS John Paul Jones and attend a change of command ceremony on the Missouri. Also a full trip around Pearl Harbour. Something I will never forget .....ever.
I am in command of a Sea Cadet Unit over here Named Training Ship 'John Paul Jones'. The man himself weas born about 20 miles from where I live and we often help the Birthplace Museum to carry out functions. STEAM IS GREAT DIESEL IS CONFOOSING ha ha ha ha..

Well thats the bits back on (except the turbo, it was to bloody hot at the time to touch it lol) and yes I did lose the rocker.......... for about a bloody hour....I had to shut my shed door due to the blue air of language eminating from withing....What a ******* idea that is!
Any how, did find I had not put the washer in, I had put two in No 1 (I was feeling kind to it)! Stll leaks though, but nowhere near as bad. Smoke almost gone now except on initial revving, but again, a 16th of what it was. Knock has gone too completly.

A quick question,
Can I jut replace the nozzles on the injectors or does it have to go to a specialist?
Reason I ask, is that the specialist is shut down at present, is 80 miles away anyway and I can get the nozzles for an 1/8th of the price.
I seem to see very conflicting views on this so woud be grateful for yuor ansers.

I don't know about the injector nozzle. I think most on this side of the oceans take them to a diesel shop. Those shops are more comfortable working on injectors than working on our odd engines. What about the wrecking yard? I haven't read of one coming apart before so you're #1! Might want to post a "WTB (Want To Buy)" on the LOSTJEEPS forum. There are some guys with collections of these CRD jeeps. Three good injectors in every destroyed engine.

The half-wit worked on Jeep plumbing yesterday. Everything on the turbo side of the engine is back in place and good to go. Timing seems one tooth off on one cam so I get to play some more there. Then it's on to the other side, top, and front of the lump.

It's the Coriolis effect. Also why you folks don't drive on the right side of the road and have your steering wheels backwards.
I've asked about an injector on the other forum and I'll keep you posted. Part of the Miller tool set for this engine has 4 containers to check and balance injector outputs for all four cylinders. I think the balances are set in the jeep computer with a dealer computer. Anything would be better than your #4 fountain. Years ago I got back to Anchorage on a cold night from a trip and fired up my Jeep. It ran rough and blew lots of smoke so I drove my cloud around the airport lot for awhile to see if it got better or worse. It cleared up and I later read a post that explained it. Water in the fuel can freeze and hold the injector open.

Aches, pains, nicks, and scratches are fading so I'm thinking about going another round with the thing. I used to think this "clanky" stuff was fun and do it for my friends for free. Must have been crazy.
