There are several threads on this subject and the consensus seems to be that the ethanol they put in (most) gas these days messes up the one-way valve that is supposed to cut it off. I started adding Marvel Mystery Oil to the gas a couple months ago and it seems to have cured the problem.

A more permanent fix is to replace the one-way valve. Someone around here has a very nice write-up on exactly how to do it. :)

Ethanol?

:happy175:

My 2005 has done it since I bought it at 60K. When it is close to full I set the handle at the slowest flow, hasn't spilled any since about the 4th day I owned it. Just another issue that Dodge didn't care to get right or fix once it was known.

Yes I have. It's just funny that someone would blame it for their gas tank over flowing.

One of the issues is that the bad valve causes gas to spit back out the filler tube while the tank is still filling. Is Jim's tank actually overfilling, or is it doing the spit back?

I believe the cause was based on a chemical reaction between ethanol and the rubber-type valve. If the valve swells when open, it may not close properly.

Ethanol has only been around as auto fuel since autos needed fueling. Its been commonly available in gasoline since the 1970s and early 1980s when lead content was reduced and it was added to boost octane. Any manufacturer that is using products that have a poor interaction with ethanol is cutting way to many corners, they just as well be using parts that have a poor interation with petroleum products (gas destroys cheap rubber too).

Local Casey's station has been supplying fuel to a variety of equipment and vehicles I've owned for over 20 years and every gallon they sell is at least 10% ethanol. The only "issue" I've ever had with ethanol is that it doesn't store long term without treatment. And that's in engines ranging from my 1967 Mustang with a 289 and my 1964 F600 300 6 (100% original) to my wife's 2015 Sedona and my 2014 Ford 5.0. From my 1950s Farmall to my year old Stihl chainsaw.

Doing this can cause raw gas to go down the vent tube, into the evap canister, and ruining it. Check engine light can follow. When the gas pump clicks off on it's own, stop there.

My '05 does it if I leave the handle unattended. Consequently, I don't.

I slow down the pump when I know I'm within a gallon and it clicks off as it should.

I've noticed this.

My favorite was the dumb blonde in the Beetle convertible who thought 50 drivers were waving at her, so she smiled and waved back.

And the fuel hose dragged along next to the car at 40 mph...until the red light, where someone told her what she'd done rather loudly :emotions34:

Yeah, who gives a shit if they have bad lungs and can't hover over the filler.

Sorry to get a little pissy about this... again, but it's my thread, so I'm gonna. Stop thinking inside your stanky little box. There ARE circumstances beyond one's control. We're not all as able-bodied as you - and there may come a time when you aren't so able-bodied anymore.

Maybe I got it comin'. I remember a time walking behind some old guy sucking o2 through a hose in his nose. Me and my buddy would chuckle over the thought of pinching his hose off, letting the pressure build, then letting it go real quick to see if it would blow wax balls out his ears. Now I'm the old guy with a hose in my nose.
