Best thing you can do is to get a shift kit, K&N or Amsoil drop in filter, and a free flowing exhaust.

I agree. Shift kit isn't going to give you more HP though...but will help the vehicle move gears faster and more efficiently.

With a KJ...the best performance mod would probably be an engine swap though. If you want to pony up the money you could probably get a performance shop to work the heads and grind you a custom cam. Alternatively you could probably also get the bottom end of the engine rebuilt (forged pistons/connecting rods at least components) and get a turbo/SC setup done. That's probably as much money and time as a complete engine swap though.
