It looked to me like it bent the frame with that super thing.

That can total the truck. More so on a jeep with a uni-frame.

Weak frame and poor engineering on that ford caused it to buckle like that..

The two different crash tests are exactly that... different. :p

Take the Liberty for example. 5 star for the NHTSA test... but marginal for the IIHS test.

Hyedipin, that's a different truck. The model you showed is newer than the one jeepjeepster posted.

how come it's got 5 star then? I think that one tested was initial test, then they fixed that. That was just wrong. http://www.safercar.gov/Index2.cfm?...&myModel=F-150&GoButton=View+specific+vehicle
http://www.safercar.gov/Cars/4507.html

That super thing doesn't bend, it has a spring on it, supposedly absorbs the impact.

Thats a different truck. That truck was the model before that truck you showed. :)

And that super bumper, once it stops absorbing watch it.. The hitch bends down.

Looks to me like the NHTSA is a bunch of crap.

NHT does safety
IIHS does damage cost-wise (what kind of damage would cause how much to them)

one cares about your safety, other cares about their pocket

Timely thread....we picked up my wifes Libby from the body shop yesterday.
She let someone park it for her when at a meeting and the guy backed into a tree. Tailgate, bumper, tail light, etc and $1943.87 to make it like new again. Yep, the fella who backed it into the tree ponied up the cash...

how come the Liberty was the only one they slammed into a wall and all the others hit a post? maybe the post wouldn't hurt the Libby enough! :D

Yeah, but for that thing to be effective (if it even is in the first place) on our Libertys, it has to stick out PAST the spare tire. If you notice in the crash tests, the reason it did so much damage to those SUVs is because the pole slammed the spare tire into the rear gate, crumpling the gate and busting out the window + unseen damage. I don't think that superbumper sticks out that far.

probably wouldn't be too hard to make one that did stick out far enough. Looks like it just resides in the hitch. Not sure how they keep it in place for towing but allowing it to move forward to absorb impact shouldn't be too hard. Finding a strong enough spring, small enough to get around the hitch bar, might be the hardest part.

Or you could just get Rock Lizard's rear bumper with the swing-outs and worry more about what you back into than the Jeep your backing up with. :D

I spoke on the phone with the fella who backed her Libby into the tree.
He felt like an idiot since he is also the property owner.
He gladly offered to pay for the damages and apologized profusely.
I told him to relax, catch his breath and write the check...
We've all done stupid things,right?

Darn Libbys are tough machines though. A friend of mine was t-boned in his by some POS in a stolen car. The kid was being chased by Arizona state police(stolen car+drugs+guns...imagine that) and hit him when blowing through a stop light at an intersection. My friend was the only one who needed help to get out of the Liberty while the family got out on their own. The Liberty took one hell of a hit and really protected the family. That incident definitely influenced my decision to buy a Jeep Liberty. The punk and his stolen Mustang didn't fare too well but who cares, the family involved was protected.

Yeah, I'm sure they could make one that sticks out that far, but it would have to absorb all impact before the object that has been hit makes it to the spare tire not one that obsorbs impact all the way to the bumper like the ones shown on their site.

If you're that worried, take your spare off and stick it on the roof or inside. That's a lot more practical than having a HUGE bumper that sticks way out.
