So the engine locked up and my mechanic and I are in the process of looking for new motors. He can find some motors but most are in the $2k range and most have warranties. I read the Powertech 4.7L V8 will fit right in? I am thinking they might be easier to find. If so what additional modding/work would my mechanic have to do to get this engine in?

Also someone had posted a link to a website which had engines, cannot find it so if you have it post it again please.

Thanks

It will be easier and a lot cheaper just to find another 3.7 from similar year to drop in.
Only Troy (TJKJ) would have a better idea on the mess involved going to 4.7.
I do not think anyone has done this major mod in here.
You have to consider the transmission/electrical/ computer /sensors etc as it all changes when you want to install the V-8.

Agreed - although the 4.7L may be fun, it's going to be pretty pricey to have a mechanic figure out all the electrical and whatnot.

Low mileage 3.7L, or a reman unit, are your best bets.

I think if you drop a V-8 in there most of the electrical wont work without a major rewire. Something like that should be a trail rig and not a DD...

You can piece together a brand new 3.7 right from Jeep for about $3500,heck a short block is only about $1800,then $650 for new heads(X2),then the little stuff and you have a brand new engine(not remaned).

And then install, will be close to $5k which is about what my pockets are. Could buy a TJ for that price

$5k for a TJ and a whole new set of problems:happy175::happy175:

Install is a breeze, besides putting the engine together, which is not hard as long as you got a good torque wrench,it is only a 1 day job,2 days including putting the engine together(about 10-12 hours total time) and more then easy enough to be done in any driveway.

Only thing you'll need besides a good torque wrench is a cherry picker... An engine stand would make things easier but not necessary.

I agree.

The question you have to ask your self would be how long you plan on keeping this current Jeep, that should factor into your decision. Don't forget to shop for quality, warranty and price if your going the reman route.

Most salvage yards will offer warranties for the low mileage units.

I previously worked for an Engine Remanufacturer, Installer & National Franchiser in Philadelphia for 13 years. Throughout my tenure there I dealt with these guys as one of our franchisees. (we also supplied them engines):

Motorworks of NY, located in Amityville, NY, Speak with Doug & Gary they are the owners. They also do installations. (631) 608-4380. www.enginereplacement.com

As i'm typing this I just spoke with Doug to confirm and they can definately get you a good low mileage used or remanufactured unit.

Jasper engines is another name that comes to mind they remanufacturer and sell their engines to distributors: www.jasperengines.com

Sorry to hear it Vranes. I guess that noise your heard in that other thread really did mean that the damage had been done.

I remember cringing when I read your original message. Good luck. My opinion: Throw in a new/reman'd/used engine and get 175,000 miles out of your truck.

Frankly, I don't know why more people don't just buy new engines for vehicles. Heck of a lot cheaper than buying a new vehicle. (provided everything else is still in relative working order)

You're in good company buddy...I'm on my second 3.7L in two years. Word on the street is that the cost of these engines (used) is going up astrnomically...like around $100 every few weeks.

We aren't the only ones going kaboom.

I got a quote of $2900 for a Jasper replacement. Cheapest used unit I could find was around $1600, with no warranty. Units with warranties are going for around $2000 or better. A couple years ago you could find these for $750!

I wonder how much a long block new from dealer would cost.
It would almost makes sense to invest in a new one over another used for warranty and longevity, if you want the KJ to be happy in the real long run.

No doubt about it.

Speaking for myself, I just want to get mine back together as cheaply as possible so I can send it down the road and get myself a GM truck.

I don't need an engine, but I did research for one, I found a place that remanufatures the engine, for 2525 and it comes with 5 year unlimited milage warrenty
I have not called/talked to them and you still would need to have your engine pulled and the new installed
