Tow hook “m” bolts

Hello. I got a set of factory tow hooks off eBay and they came with the factory mounting brackets. There’s absolutely no way to get at the location to mount the brackets without removing the front bumper, which I’d prefer not to do. Any chance someone knows of the part number for the mopar m bolts? Using the m bolt seems like a very manageable task by comparison.

Front bumper is easy to R&R , and to do it right , remove the bumper

Not just that, but the M bolt is not very strong, so with the front bumper removed, now you can install proper grade bolts or studs from inside the frame with a solid backing plate. Less likely to rip out the frame and snap those puny M bolts!

Meh. The stock mounting hardware is strong enough that a hard tugging on the tow hooks bends the frame anyway. My '04 parts wagon is an example of this.

I was speaking anecdotally, since it has not happened to me; however I have seen plenty of posts by others who claim it did occur. So... your mileage may vary, I guess?

Perhaps if someone really wanted to rely on those tow points, they should weld reinforcement plates to all sides of the frame in that area and extending a bit beyond... clearly it is not designed to handle those kinds of stresses.

What I have seen over the years is people getting stuck then having someone back up to their bumper and take off and then of course the results are torn or badly bent tow point location.
If pulled on right usually no damage at all

My enthusiasm for installing the stock hooks has waned until I come up with something better for the mounting. Tow-bar mounts for the KJ tie into the cradle bolts at least.
In the meantime the KJ's recovery point is the receiver hitch with one of these:

I have the same on the back... I also installed some retention tow hooks to either side of the trailer hitch in the thickest plate steel it had. Would be good for tie downs if nothing else.

I use a "Smittybilt beaver tail" , way better, way easier to hook a tow strap to, looks cool ( but have to answer many questions of where I got it, whats it cost, would I sell mine etc) :happy175:

Seen those.... actually, my local Tractor Supply Co. has them.

Okay now we’re getting somewhere. So, What to do??? I figured the stock stuff would be stout enough to pull me out of the mild/med wheeling I plan on doing (just in case), but now I’m reconsidering... or at least thinking I need something more

Its not the type of wheeling you do, you can get really stuck when you're not even trying to wheel! But main issue is the person hooking to you and how they pull on you. Seen people that had watched too many YouTube videos and ended up jerking and trying to pull others out
Good straight steady pulls you will be fine in most cases

Just got these installed. 02-04 Front bumper is one of the most pain in the butt covers I’ve ever tackled including European luxury cars. Wouldn’t be that bad except the damn fender flare clips are very difficult to get to, plus there are just a lot of fasteners holding this thing on - and they’re all rivets! Replacing all rivets with push tree fasteners so I never have to do this again.
