First trip of the year went well. As always, Bert performed most excellently on and off road. Found some excellent specimens! ( the best of which are not shown)
Had a few non Jeep equipment failures, but that is what this trip was for- testing, testing, testing)

Today I booked the Magic Frog in for a new timing belt / water pump (2.8 CRD). It had a new belt at 50k and that was 7 years ago according to receipts. Decided that at 100k I would have it replaced and am now 500 miles off that. Is there anything else that should be done while there is access? Like crankshaft oil seal etc? All the serpentine stuff was done a few months ago so that's all good.

Think my backplate doesn't have many years left!

Weather's dry, no other jobs on my list so I can finally get the back axle put back together.

That's handy to know, luckily I had a spare on another axle I used.

I got backplates for the front of my WJ from them, they sent the wrong ones. They were pretty good about it - but shouldn't they know WJ's don't have front backplates?
They are just a parts warehouse, I bought shock absorbers from them a while ago, amazingly cheap but very slow to deliver.

Pumped and replaced 3 quarts of atf out of the transmission through the dipstick tube and added 2 tubes of shudder fix for good measure. Wasn't having problems and the fluid didn't look horrible. I know it's not quite as good as dropping the pan, but I figure it's better than nothing. It wasn't all that many miles ago that I did a pan drop and filter change.

Doesn't explain, much less excuse, contriving to supply parts that don't exist.

Don't remember delivery time (it was a couple of years ago now) but, as I said, after-sales was really good, nor something you usually get with such operations.

Coincidently, have just now ordered a pair of rear shox, from carpartsinmotion (which is becoming my go to supplier) they're NAPA, which bodes well, & an excellent price, before the 20% Fleabay promotional code - & I should get them on Saturday! Obviously they're not Bilsteins, not at 1/6th of the price, but I really couldn't countenance spending 25% of the cost of the vehicle on a pair of shox.

I just changed the oil. While doing so, I found I forgot to reconnect the MAF sensor last weekend. So, I’ve been driving it all week without that, but I didn’t notice anything off about it.

That O2 sensor I ordered so long ago I'd almost forgotten it was on the doorstep last night. Didn't look like it came from China, so don't really understand the 3-4 week delivery time. Thing is, I don't actually need it now, still it was cheap enough & whose to say how long that '96 XJ downstream one will keep the CEL out.

Today the shox I ordered Wesnesday arrived in the mail, I was occupied with the XJ today but as it's long weekend might have a go tomorrow, as it's not really pressing, but looks pretty straightforward (not something that can often be said about work on a KJ)

Took it down to get the miserable eCheck. It was recently reset and apparently did not have enough engine cycles to qualify as "ready". Piss on me.

Saw a Commander while I was down there. When I first got my Jeep almost exactly 10 years ago I saw them all over the place. Now it is a rare event. I still see a lot of Liberty's.

Fitted those rear shox, remarkable for 2 reasons: its the 1st job I've done on the KJ that wasn't necessary but to improve it a little &, so far, the only one that is easier than the corresponding work on an XJ.

It'd been even easier if I'd had a deep 18mm socket, a 15mm box wrench & a lift, or at least a pro. quality rattle gun.

Anyway, flushed with success, I investigated the fuse box & found one 20amp that had blown (I knew straightaway because it was one of those fancy ones with the little built in neon). A little puzzled because the only things that don't work are the cigarette lighter & the rear power socket, which have separate fuses. Anyway, I replaced it with one from my '96 parts XJ - then noticed 2 missing fuses, fitted a couple more 20amp fuses & - voila, the 2 things that had never worked, did.

There was still the mystery of the 1st fuse I replaced - but later remembered the sunroof's never worked: hmmmm, I wonder . . .
