Filthy, whiney, special snowflakes are gone for the summer. Bert and I are enjoying a leisurely drive through the rolling loess hills of north eastern Nebraska. Stopped for a break at the Winnebago reservation.

Next stop: Ponca reservation and Ponca State park, the only Nebraska park that deserves the title.

Changed the oil and oil filter. It had gone 5,992 miles on the old oil. I use a full synthetic that states it is guaranteed for 10,000 miles, but going nearly 6K is double what I usually allow. I am old and the days of 3,000-mile oil changes are still heavily ingrained in my mind. I will sleep easier tonight.

For what it is worth, with 105,421 on the engine I still have never had to add oil between changes. (Knock wood.) I've had cars in the past that burned so much oil you almost didn't need to actually change it. With a fresh quart every three or four weeks that kind of took care of itself.

Most dangerous thing here is stinging nettle...and pop-up thunderstorms with fist-size hail, which is just par for the course anywhere in the Plains. Which as I write a good one is rolling in.

fwiw i just crossed 200K on the odometer and i usually go around 5K in between changes with the high mileage full synthetic stuff. i've always been amazed at how many people are unable to do simple maintenance like oil/filter/brake pads. it's not hard and helps keep your vehicle running right, plus it just feels good to work on your own ride.

Drove Bert over to Lewis and Clark State Recreation Area, set camp, and took Ernie kayaking in the big artificial lake. This AstoAI porta fridge still rocks for the hot season overlanding. Nothing like a frosty drink after a workout.

Spent three hours in the hot sun changing the air filter, a tedious, grueling, and physically demanding ordeal.

(Oh, who do I think I am kidding? Took two minutes in the nice cool garage and 90 seconds of that was remembering where I left the new one when I came home from the store yesterday.)

Got my first check engine light in my '07...put my own analyzer on and got the expected low voltage code. Battery aged out. Pretty easy to reach all the consumable parts, thankfully. Sold my 2019 Wrangler in which nothing was handy and couldn't even see plugs or fan belt.
But I have no idea why the first owner of my kj chose the 42 LRE trans....what crap compared to the 45...

Rebuilt the rear suspension this weekend. Shocks, K member, lower arms and fresh springs. The surprise wiggles gone! Next weekend, the front gets hit.
