Every pic of a wrecked KJ I've seen has one thing in common: the passenger area looks like it held up really well.

Ohh bless. Looks like it took it pretty good since it did tare the entire axle out. Maybe someone tied a steel cable to it then to a pole and as he took off it ripped it out. \/

Tying a cable to an axle will only result in a busted cable.
Seen it on Mythbusters. 8-[

That was my 1st impression: perhaps it took a bash afterwards?

Yeah, whatever it was hit the rear wheel/tire directly. The windows are all in tact, and there is no sign of an impact to the body directly. Looks to me like a small car slammed directly into the rear axle from the side or rear corner.
