    oil leak

    Beware there are different gaskets for the metal vs plastic rocker covers. Timing cover, oil pan, and various sensors can leak also. I reckon I cut the leaking in half with a new rocker cover gasket. I can put up with the remaining leak and top up the oil once between oil changes.

    Sorry to sound 'backhanded' - wasn't my intent. I get to the same point sometimes where I can't see the forest for the trees. Need to take a step back and re-assess what actually matters to keep the thing driving. Edit: also have dealt with 90's Chevy ABS systems that had no place in a vehicle...

    I could have found, bought, and swapped in an LSD rear end in less time than this thread has gone on. No scan tools or shop visits to pay for. The 3-key-cycle trick spits out the essential OBD2 codes just fine.

    Factory limited slip. I would prefer a locker actually - but would prefer either one over electronic traction control.

    Spacers weren't a problem for me. I went with Teraflex kit and aftermarket upper arms. That was 12 years and 150,000km ago. Few other tricks along the way.... KK strut forks, Tri-link spacer, 4runner coils, load-assist shocks, and CRD front coils. This is a cheaper copy of the Teraflex spacers...

    Top end rebuild parts

    I bought cheap parts off Amazon and rockauto. Gasket set, head bolts, lifters, spark plugs, injectors. Got the timing chain stuff too, but didn't end up using it - managed to change the passenger side head swapped without taking off the timing cover.

    I kept it. Felt the rear was pretty soft overall after lifting. Then I added load-assist shocks.

    I put in the load-assist (coilover) style rear shocks to firm things up. Believe they were Durango application.

    We stopped at 245/75R16 because it already rubs, and herself doesn't want the bumper or flares chopped up for clearance.

    Will KK front end struts and spring work on a KJ?

    I run the KK clevis for a bit of lift. The top part of the KK strut is the wrong angle - it's likely just the plate. Also running Rancho struts (shocks) listed for the KJ, a long with the CRD coils.

    I think you're putting too much reliance on a finicky system. Our '05 has no ABS or traction control (factory) and it's been an excellent offroader and winter-road-tripper.

    I have to admit, I'm over the steel diff idea. I ran a locker for while and didn't break anything. 311,000km now with half that on 3" lift - and no broken housing. I also keep a spare one just in case.

    The combustion chamber and cam profile change from 04 to 05. https://www.motorreviewer.com/engine.php?engine_id=180 I have mismatched heads on our 05 now. Didn't realize it until I was ready to bolt things up. It does run fine though.

    I still have the stock ones at 310,000km. They have endured a 3" lift for half of that. With jobber parts, i have best luck with greasable ones, and actually grease them regularly.

    Maybe the shift cable is seizing up? Check the bushing/grommet on the end of the cable? Shift fork pads (nylon) inside the tcase can wear out too. Cheap parts, but a lot of work to renew.

    I don't have the answer, but I got crush-sleeve eliminators instead. I don't have the experience or confidence to get this stuff right the first time. The super 30 crush sleeve (and eliminator) is shared with a few other diffs - maybe it's the JK/KK D30. I'm away from home so I can't check what...
