I just bought myself a very used 2004 Liberty, which had shocks that were good and shot. I did a little looking around on the forum and the latest thread that I found was quite a bit old so I decided to post some updated information on part numbers, cost and where to buy.

I picked up my replacement shocks at Rock Auto, which just happens to be a forum sponsor. They also have a discount code that you can use, which expires after a few months. Just do a search for their discount code and you will find the latest thread that they have posted with that information.

To keep down on reading, I made some videos. I just bought this car the other day and it is going to take a LOT of cleaning to make it look presentable so pardon the carnage. Let's start with the hood first.

Now for the hood, the shocks I purchased were around $13. Attaching them to the car was relatively simple. All you had to do was SLIGHTLY open the clip at each end of the shock and then press it directly on the knuckle attached to the car. If you remove ONE of yours, it makes it easier to understand how to put the replacement on on the car. Here are a few pictures that will help. I don't know what years actually use these part numbers so maybe someone will chime in and let us all know.

Part Number:

Brand:

This is the way your shock end will look when you take it out of it's packaging:

you need to use a small, flat-head screwdriver to gently, CAREFULLY and patiently RAISE that clip up off the end of the shock so that it looks like this:

If you aren't careful, you'll pull the clip off too far and it will go flying off somewhere so don't be THAT guy. :favorites68:

Here are my final results:

The rear shocks go on the same way. They are a DIFFERENT part number so don't buy the wrong part.

And the before and after results. BEFORE:

I hope this helps someone!:icon_razz:

Did the rear glass on our new (to us) KJ today as SWMBO was getting pissed off at using a broom stick (to hold the glass up ..........)
Rang around to get some prices and all were about $95aud
Found a ebayer selling brand new struts for aprox $25aud a pair so went with them.
Work a treat and so much better now

Yea, like me! I had never dealt with it. The only car that I have ever worked on was my 1979 El Camino and my 2001 Corvette. I'm new to Jeeps. Got mine for practically nothing and now I'm going through it fixing everything. Just came out of the garage after dealing with the door locks. My REMOTE will lock and unlock the doors but the switch won't lock any of the doors on the driver or passenger side. That is going to be fun trying to figure out.

I'd start by grabbing your multi-meter and checking output voltage on the switch in question... could just be a faulty switch assembly.

Given the two vehicles you've only worked on before, this hood/lift glass strut replacement will teach you well, as it is the same procedure for just about every car that uses them.. late 80's on up.

Well, thank goodness that I trouble-shoot stuff for a living because my mind works wonders around problems. As I was working on a computer using my remote connection software, the Jeep issue was tumbling around in the back of my mind. I couldn't understand how taking the driver's door apart would affect the passenger's door lock switch. In MY mind, it couldn't because the remote worked the locks both ways. I didn't need a schematic to figure that out, although I am hoping that someone on here will tell me that the service manual for this car is available on DVD so that I can run it on my computer (like I do with my GM cars).

Then it dawned on me...

When I was trying to lock the doors using the switch, the keys were in the ignition. I got the grand idea that Chrysler designed this car so that you COULDN'T lock the doors with the keys in the ignition for obvious reason. But thinking even further, I figured that they designed it so that the remote would override that feature for reasons that are also obvious. I am so confident in my hypothesis that I didn't even bother to verify that. I know with 100% certainty that I have no issue, I just didn't realize that some engineer was on his game when this car was designed. Kudos to him. ;)

depends on what year your KJ is.
Here's the link to the FSM
Index of /manuals/Jeep/KJ

I stubled upon these documents during my search a week or so ago. I have a 2004 so I don't know if the 03' or 05' is my best bet. However, these manuals seem incomplete. They show some good description information on how stuff works but not a lot of step by step on the R&R of the car. Is there a DVD of the entire manual out there somewhere?

No there isn't and that's why I want one for my 2004. I prefer to have it on DVD as my eyes are not the best when it comes to reading paper. The link you shared does not include the 2004. This manual doesn't show a lot of repair information, however, it does give very good descriptions of how modules work. Is this the Chrysler service manual? Attached iss an example of what I am looking for from my GM manual. It gives you EVERYTHING about a repair, including the torque values.

I noticed that this forum doesn't allow you to attach any documents larger than 19K. Man, that ***** because I had to search to find one that small. If I have a good service manual, I can do very good technical writeup's. Here are two of a BUNCH of writeup's that I have done for forums that I participate on.
