Alrightly. I tried to charge my Fiancée's A/C in her '02 KJ Friday night. The compressor clutch kicked on for a split second after pressure built up and then we found out one problem. The high side discharge line had a huge whole in the rubber tube. The whole was right where the metal is crimped and it was near the compressor side of the tubing. It’s also looked to be kinked which probably led to the whole being there. So I ordered a new discharge line Saturday and installed it this morning. (gotta love Advance Auto for being quick :D )

After we charged the system again, the compressor clutch kicks on for 5 seconds and then shuts off for 5 seconds then kicks on again for another 5. It does this over and over. I have a pressure gauge on the low side. There is currently 45PSI in the system. When the clutch activates that pressure drops to around 15-20PSI and then the clutch shuts off and the pressure builds back to 45PSI and then turns back on. I checked all the fuses and they all look good.

I searched the forums and couldn't find anything related to my problem. Has anyone seen this before? Any advice on what else I should check? I don't have much experience with working on air conditioners. My next steps are asking all of you what it could be and also taking it to my local Garage I go to.

Thanks in advance!

It will continue to click on and off until it's fully charged - I sometimes jumper the low psi switch when charging.

Be aware that the correct way is to weight the charge when re-charging and only after running a vacuum pump for at least one hour to remove any non-condensibles.

my advice is, after you get the new hose on that had the hole in it, go spend $110 at the dealership and let them do the vaccum and charge. one wrong move or under/over charge on your part could cost you more money in the long run.

my wifes clutch died a few weeks ago. after weighing out all the costs, i just tore everything out, put in a remaned compressor w/clutch and the new line and condensor thing...then let the dealership do the rest. just my thoughts....

What about the Pressure though in the system? The gauge I have is telling me that 45PSI is right on the edge of safe PSI levels. i'm worried about blowing any lines.

I was also wondering about air being in the lines since i replaced the Discharge line.

The pressure in the system when the compressor's not running doesn't mean anything - it'll all work doing it without running a vacuum pump- it just won't be as cold and may end up freezing at the internal metering valve.

Those "DIY" R134A recharge kits found a wally world are not even close to being anywhere accurate. Each vehicle will have different normal psi ranges for the high and low sides. The KJ's A/C system depends on the temp and humidity. You really need to have the proper poeple with proper equipment do the evac and recharge so the correct amount of R134A is put into the system which is impossible with those "DIY" kits.

Thanks for your input guys.

I'm going to talk to my dealership about it. I go there a lot and they work well with me. There are a few small Shops around here that work on A/C systems but they over charge for there work and don't even fix the problem half the time. ( I know form experience). I think i'm gonna take flairs idea and have the system vaccumed and charged. I was talking to one of my co-workers who works on a cars and he said a vaccum and charge would need to be done since I replaced the high side line.
