Well, if you know what low Power Steering fluid while turning sounds like, then you've come to the right place. I'm started to get that whirring, checked the fluid low, I can barely see anything in the reservoir. Question is, if I can pin point the leak (I'm pretty sure there's a leak, there's fluid underneath my car), can I fix it myself, or would a leak be caused by a pump issue? Also, ATF+4 fluid is the recommended fluid for my KJ, would it be ok to get the MOPAR PS fluid, fill it, turn the wheels back and forth to push the fluid through, and wait a few days to check it in given the time of year? Or would it better to not drive it, check it in and have a shop (or dealer) fix it.

If you guys want pictures I can get some in tomorrow.

P.S. Leak, three likely suspects. Hose, pump, rack. Any of them require moderate skill level, hose or pump either easier than rack. Continue with ATF+4.

Mine's leaking out a seal in the rack, right into the boot that covers the inner tie rod. I found out when I pulled a stick out of the boot while wheeling. So pull the boots back and check under there!

If you looked at the oil anywhere else and it was kinda black, would you have to ask?

Simple reason being I was told by many mechanics it "looks okay" and it's not whining or anything. I got it from my grandpa like that so I didn't touch it. All other fluids have been changed but the ps fluid.
Some relatives have worked for Chrysler many years and said the same thing.
I'm not an idiot I can change my own fluids. However I'm not going to mess with something that doesn't need to be messed with.
I just put big 4 bills on a new motor. Last thing I want to do is replace that power steering pump. I've been told this and that so I'm not sure what to believe.

For changing the PS fluid, is it just as simple as sucking the old stuff out of the reservoir and putting new stuff in? Does it need to be bleed?

I'm sorry if I don't know the exact process of servicing power steering. Some of us aren't as experienced as others or are way younger than some of you. I'm only going to be 20 in a couple weeks and the only thing I have not messed with is that power steering pump. Im afraid it'll start crying if I mess with it. That's what Jeeps seem to do when you mess with them. Enlighten me. As far as getting all of the old fluid out, how much fluid it calls for, etc.
remember , JEEP: Just empty every pocket.

While having an assistant start it while you keep it full while catching what comes through the removed return hose may be a more complete procedure, just partially sucking fluid out with a turkey baster and filing with fresh in two or three episodes will produce the same result without the potential for as much fuss, muss, and bother.

Yes,if the fluid has appreciable discoloration, changing may not be a must, what's it gonna hurt?

Change it, mine all get changed at 45-50,000 on PS
Turkey baster suck all you can out, fill back up drive for a day , suck out what you can fill, keep doing this 4-5 days should get most of the old out
Radiator( cooling system ) brakes ( bleed entire system and replace fluid ) , P.S. etc all need done on a regular basis

Some folks thinks fluids like PS, etc last a lifetime , they don't

^X2 Considering how hot the PS fluid gets, the friction modifiers, what lubes your pump/rack etc are well worn out and your's is black.. way overdue for fresh ATF+4 !!!
I use the Flotool to remove the old PS fluid. $6 and works great!

Well yeah I'm gonna replace what I sucked out lol. I've heard this and this about the 02 how they use different fluids and this guy uses atf and this guy that knows this guy uses ps fluid etc. so atf+4 should be good correct?

Any risk in causing damage by replacing old fluid (kind of like transmissions?)

The ATF +4 is an update/upgrade from reg PS fluid.
ATF+4 is a good synthetic fluid, high sheer/pressure, long lasting, use that.
Can probably get 4 changes out, from 1 quart.
There is a fill line on the front for either hot or cold, don't over fill it.
