I drove my 03 to Florida from Las Vegas. It did great. One small hiccup that didn't show up until I was about three hours from the end of the trip. I'll get to that later. Total mileage for the trip was 2600mi. Total fuel 134.84 gallons. Average MPG 19.282 The first part of the trip I set the cruise control to 75mph, the second half to 80mph. That first tank killed my average, it was all city driving, getting out of vegas for the most part.

The issue I mentioned earlier was a tapping noise that was mostly only present at idle and if you blipped the throttle it would get really loud then subside. I didn't notice any tapping at highway speeds. I got on the forum here and searched a bit. Mostly doom and gloom stuff like rod bearings or lifters. Someone had mentioned pulling the serpentine belt off, and that narrowed it down quite a bit, because it went away completely. I'm almost positive it is the AC clutch. When the AC is on and the clutch is engaged it is the worst, when you turn off the AC it (the tapping noise) almost stops. I still can't rule out it being the idler pulley set-up though.

Other than the small issue, I have really grown to love this little jeep.

Fuelly.com is a great way to log your gas mileage. My Jeep is on there, with over 150,000 miles tracked over 10 years.

I use an app on my phone - Carpros - I track all my vehicles maintenance and fuel mileage that way. It's been a decent app and works great for how i use it. Fuelly looks awesome though for figuring out what the avg fuel mileage will be for a specific car over the long haul.

Did the bump stops after I realized my front drivers side one was missing. Since I'm not lifted, I went with Crown over the Teraflex. Popped right in with my Fiskers Folding Entrenching shovel and then I drove it through a few bad parking lots to make sure they were tight.

I also took the time to replace the gear select light with an led since I had the center counsel out anyway!

That was such a pain in the ass for me because I stupidly removed the whole socket and couldn't get my fat fingers in to to push it back in. I eventually pushed a skewer in the socket and pulled it through the top.

I just used some gorrilla epoxy to make a new bracket since i cut the old socket out and replaced it with an LED.

Stopped before work to pick up plugs, wipers, a headlamp lens buffing kit, a little bondo, and a bucket of truck bed liner. Gonna do some cosmetic body work to spruce up all the oncology I did, and make the Jeep a little less white and a little more resistant to lower body damage from frakkin' cedars and gravel. Finished up restoring the trim panels over breakfast.

Well, it is official. I sacrificed three hours of my life for two signatures and 70$…But the ScienceMobile has plates and is officially roadworthy. Nebraska requires an inspection for out of state titles( this was an Iowa Jeep)…which is why I’ve focused on the repairs I’ve been doing…

Stupid Pennsylvanian hick….busting my butt to pass inspection and in Nebraska a guy comes out and charges you ten bucks to make sure the VIN matches….

Anyway, “Bert” is going camping in Kansas next weekend to “test” the 1800$ I’ve sunk into a 500$ machine.

Welp. Frak it. Got a wild hair up my but and said “It’s good enough.” Packed quickly go box and my go bag and drove Bert about 2 hours south to Indian Cave State Park. No off roading…it ain’t ready for that…but I got angus burgers on my Trangia and Desert Oracle on my podcast. Fireflies are out.
No urban lowglow here tonight, no clouds. Stars reflecting in Bert’s factory white paint.

Bought this junker to camp. I’m camping.

Good enough.

Today I decided I'll make a new music CD for the KJ. The Jeep still has its original stereo, so CDs. The only radio station in the area is the low powered classic country station, KHIL ( http://khilradio.net ). It's okay, but not all the time.

Got the fog buffed out of the headlights. 2 hours of cerium oxide and water. Tried one of the DIY kits, but wasn’t enough.

Changed the plugs…oh the horrors I’ve seen.

troubleshot a noise that I thought might be the front diff, but turned out to be a wheel bearing on its last legs…good thing I already ordered them…

also cleaned about thirty pounds of dead bugs off the front from last night’s drive.

The AC’s been working overtime over the past few days. It’s been HOT! High 90’s low triples. Very hot for June in northern MN.

Finally after months of trying to figure out where the coolant was going. Following Tom's advise about bleeding the system (22 times), turned out to be a very simple thing I completely over looked. All the parts store called for a 16 lb cap. Never thought of checking the Haynes manual which called for a 18-22 lb cap. Put the 18 on and for the past month haven't had to add any coolant, even the past few days with AC on for a early heat wave in Maryland of 90's in June.

apparently my Jeep wanted us to spend more quality time together, because as I was driving my son to a friend's birthday party today, the front driver side lower control arm ball joint failed. Not like the nut sheared off, which I have also had happen before - no, this time, the ball literally popped out of the top socket. Luckily, it happened as I was coming to a stop at a stoplight, so no real danger, just annoying. Got a tow back to my house and - bonus - when I pulled everything apart, I realized the front left CV axle also broke. So yeah, I spent some unexpected time with the Liberty today, and looks like I'll be spending more when the parts come in. Thank goodness for Amazon that can get parts here fairly quickly!
