Well, not to my Liberty.... But to the wife's 94 ZJ...
Finished installing (with my son doing most of the work as he's the pro and it's his work, but me doing all the 'wierd/non standard' stuff) a fresh 4.0 in the wife's ZJ.
It took us a bit, old motor died around the 14th (not completely, but a bad mains knock), we ordered a long block from Oreilly and had it in hand by the 18th. 3 grand, 4 year warranty. Pulled the old motor out on the 20th-21st (about 5 hours of effort) and then it took us the rest of the weekend and a bit into that Monday after work to crossdeck the old parts (tin, distribution, etc), prime the motor, stab the distributor and all. While he was doing that, I went through cleaning the engine bay and undercarriage - evicting Squirrel nest, looking for surface rust and treating the undercarriage to an OSPHO bath. VERY little surface rust. The worst rusted thing was the actual trailer ball on the hitch, and it isn't bad at all. Replace pretty much anything that had to come off the motor from the old one, unless it had been done in the last 3 years. Also got the exhaust good and tight. Between using an unfamiliar MIG, and not thinking to pull the pieces to driver side while tightening them down (and those ****** damn ubolt clamps), the exhaust was lucky it never fell out. Got it all squared and clearanced. Used band clamps where I'd use the ubolt clamps previously. Applied JB Weld epoxy putty where I'd had some porosity making leaking joints. She sounds and runs great now. 60psi of oil pressure.
Saved easily 3 grand in labor charges by my son and I doing it ourselves (plus the fact we got to address all the targets of opportunity, like exhaust, full inspection and OSPHO treatment, etc...
In the last 6.months, my son and I have saved our family EASILY in excess of 10 grand in labor charges by having the ability to DIY.
Next on the ZJ -
-R&R stock D35 (bad axle shaft on D side, bad gear oil leak) with a takeout D44a from a V8 ZJ. Will also go to 4.10 (we went from stock 29s to 31" tires), and disk rear brakes. Yes, VB and MC will be replace then, too, with an ABS delete.
-replace D door panel. Repair wiring as needed. Install alarm with window roll up module (because wife can't be a big girl and close a ******* window...)
-hack and tap SYE, with spare front DC shaft used in the rear.
-other stuff. This has already gone too long.
... And then there's a list for the KJ... Another time.
OOOO... Upcoming this weekend... Steering rack bushings.. Because mine have apparently completely departed....
