Well turns out the whine noise is coming from my rear differential. The mechanic I took it too said that it's going to need to be rebuilt and that it would cost between $1,800 to $2,400. I'm going to take it to another place and see what they say, but definitely was not expecting a repair like this.

That’s an overestimate. I have gotten several quotes for regearing my differentials, which would include the same components and labor as a repair. Both diffs together could be done for $2600-$3000 here in the Philly area where things are already more expensive (northeast corridor area, DC-Boston is like this). I could probably get a rear diff done for under $1000 because it is more accessible than the front one. Prices would be 2/3 in the Midwest. Don’t know about Arizona.

Also, maybe the pinion bearing is bad, which would not necessitate a full rebuild. I would get a second opinion if I were you.

That's a bad estimate. Driveline shops near me charge $1k or less for a full diff rebuild. I've had my trucks rear diff and my 07's rebuilt by the same place.
Truck was $870
07 Liberty was $950

Junk yard, low mileage KJ with same gear ratio, 200/250 bucks and half hour of time, done

Keep in mind that midwest prices are lower because mechanics have a knock down drag out fight with every fastener. They’re all rusted in place

Thanks for the input. I'm taking it to a drive shaft shop tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed that it's cheaper!

But what I wanted, and what I needed to haul my 91 year old Mother safely and easily was two completely different things LOL
so ended up with a really clean 2016 Ford Edge with all the bells and whistles 4 cylinder , turbo and runs out great
Will get ya to 100 before you can blink
never had a 4 cylinder before , but runs like a V8 so ........
Mom can get in and out easy and loves the heated seats
I've always liked Van and station wagons so telling myself this is sort of a wagon
The 05 needed a heater core, and a list of other parts , plus the Midwest rust monster was getting to her badly
So that is what it is
I'm an old man with a boring a## ride for a while into the future

No need to be embarrassed, I was just messing with ya. Today's Ford's are pretty decent cars really. My wife drives a 2019 Fusion hybrid. We also own a 2011 Nissan Juke AWD. That's a car I should be embarrassed about, but honestly the 4cyl with a turbo makes it a pretty fun ride. Plus, sounds like you're doing what you must to take care of your family which is admirable and unfortunately not so common these days. Good on you Tom!

Has anyone ever tried to install Auzzie Design’s transfer case linkage in a kj? I am pretty sure I have a 231 j. So it should be fairly straight forward correct?

It does the job
plus one of my "side jobs" is transporting Motorcycles, side by sides etc for folks who sell them privately to folks in other states
So this edge will pull any of my trailers with up to 2 bikes, one side by side etc with ease
Plus with a 4X6 area in back with rear seats folded down I can easily take a nap back there comes warmer weather

Friend of mine bought a JUKE !! OK vehicle to ride in and went pretty good , but looks wise , uhm well LOL

Trailer prices are out of control where I'm at, snagged this late night deal that needs some fixing up from the online buy/sell getting spot.

Guy said yeah just redid all the wiring just add your connector and you'll be good to go. I managed to get to the walmart before they closed. 2 trips into the store then messing around with wiring in the parking lot with a leatherman and some electrical tape and got it all working to get home.

I miss my sports cars, but can still get some thrills out of late night cash purchases, and doing wiring in a walmart parking lot after they're closed. ;)

Put a couple conduit nuts in up front and a spacer in the back for an extra little bit of clearance and then gave it an alignment - the set of tires that came on it were wearing unevenly so wanted to sort that out. Don't want to wear out my new snow tires :)

Tire rotation today. I have a new impact gun that made it a snap. Total game changer compared to doing it by hand (which I had always done). Of course I still torque the lug nuts to 100 foot pounds the old fashioned way.

A few pending issues for the new year:
1. My new ASFIR gas tank skid plate still needs installing. Been sitting in the basement for a year now! o_O
2. The CV on the transfer case end of the front drive shaft has play and needs replacing (I have the new CV on the basement shelf waiting to be installed).
3. (Most importantly) The brake pads are all down to maybe 3/16” thickness on all 4 wheels. They all need replacing and likely the rotors as well.
4. My BFG KO2 tires have a nice ride quality and good traction but are not wearing well. At 37K on them now, and will have to replace at 50K probably. My Duratracs before these went 94K before replacement. :confused:
5. The original transmission is at 203,000 miles and still working for now (with special additive). I have a replacement transmission with only 80K that I need to have checked out by a shop so it will be ready to swap in. (On my second engine so the engine itself will keep going to 300K.)
6. The rear diff service will be needed soon. Should I put in a TrueTrac?

I have very little money to spend on the above and less time. But I will keep chipping away. Brakes will take priority.
