So we need a crankcase heater. Put the 60w bulb on the crankcase for an hour with a towel draped over top (to protect from the wind) and it fired right up, no problems.

Many years ago, an old neighbor of ours heard about the light bulb on the intake manifold trick, and thought it would be even better to cover the engine with a blanket. Oops, not only did the car burn, but it took the garage down with it! :mexsmoke:

I was watching the show "Mountain Men" the other night...The guy that chases the lions has a COOL old Willy's...he calls it Wilbur. Oh...and I WANT it!! ANyway...It wouldn't start one night and he had to leave it overnight in teh freezing cold...came back and built a fire underneath it, and it fired right up! I laughed a bit.

i had a 78 ford we went ice fishing up north (way up) my friends had a bunch of new chevs back in 95 temp got to -60 ish built a smal fire under one of the chevs it woudlnt go ... my odl ford cranked.

I wasn't inside for the pic; I was outside on the step. So there :icon_lol:

Having said that, I had homework to do (in order to be told to stay home, my coworker and I had to bring home some work) while he did that. He can't work on commercial HVAC-R units while he's home ;)

Yikes!

He was careful; the bulb wasn't touching the towel. The bulb was under the crankcase, the towel was on top.

Any plans to shorten the tongue? It looks pretty long and could cause problems in rough terrain (approach/departure angles)... Looks good though!

No plans to shorten it as of yet, it was intended and has performed exactly as I hoped at archery elk camp this last fall. The extra length allows for much better control when backing up and also let's me jack knife past 120 degrees without touching the bumper. I can park it and the Jeep in the width of 2 parking slots. Also allows me to keep my tight turning radius...which I still possess, even with the 3.5" lift and 255/75/17 BFG's. There definitely is a trade off with approach/departure angles, but the single 2"x4" box steel tongue acts like a giant rock slider. Thanks for the comments

Here are some things I learned,

#1 the throttle body's are interchangeable between 2002-2003 KJ's & 2004 but the electrical connectors, the MAF & air temp sensor's are different and not compatible.
#2 I have an early 2003 which has the 2002 throttle body.
#3 A TB off of a 2003 4.7 Magnum will not fit.
#4 The 2004 Air tube does increase the sound of the engine(just a little bit).
#5 Moving the air temp sensor location may be the only benefit to switching it.
#6 The resonator box is just as obstruction free as the air tube. Just some small slots on both sides.

The end result.
Intake air temp is now consistent with outside air temp.

^ Now the next question is how do we cut up the hood to install vents, to get the darn super heated air out from the entire engine bay itself eh?...

I guess that memo is only for those of us that haven't cut up our hoods yet...
BTW you did not update your Avatar to reflect your sweet hood louvers/vents!
I forgot in one of our conversation about in winter, about keeping your feet warm and allowing jeep to warm up, & you mentioned you may have to cover in the vents as your temps were staying quite cool.
Do you have a link to your handy work on the hood or..?? Nice work..they look shiny clear coated them too didn't ya!

I've TOWED HEAVY THINGS and never had had the coolant temp so much as consider spiking off of normal.
I've driven at near highway speeds for periods of time with the plow up and "obstructing" the air flow into the front of the jeep and the same... no indicated issues with temps.

Also...

I washed. Hose connected to water heater drain, plus cheap harbor freight electric pressure washer == streams of really dirty waters coming off all the surfaces of the jeep.

Pulled a coworker out of a snowbank. Very impressed how stuck he got it. (He winter races so he was astonished he was able to get it stuck as well)

Aww go play in a snow pile. To each his own. I have had mine hot enough the trans temp light was on. The engine was at an ok temp. This was a very steep mud & ice covered 40 degree slope that really worked the Jeep to make it up. And I've done plenty of towing and such also.

Finally got around to fixing my steering problem. Pretty sure the inner tie rod was damaged when my LBJ broke; sure enough a new one fixed my issue. Now no more loose and twitchy steering.

Replaced my damaged ABS sensor as well. Still have to replace the passenger side one, but the part doesn't come in til tomorrow.

Will be nice to have my Jeep near 100% again. Always seems like something is broke or about to break. :D

Ya I also have had problems in the summer only with trans temp light on, in off road climbs, which means you have overheated the trans fluid, and should change ATF+4 out soon.
I do not have the HD cooling just the electric fan set up, and have seen 225F+ coolant temps on 85F+ days. I have had to stop, open the hood to remove the super heated air in the compartment before, to allow things to cool. Jeep should have installed the vents in the hood, to assist in underhood cooling. I have since installed a 1.5 quart over stock PML transmission pan with drain plug an so far so good. The main issue still remains in summer, if you are stuck in traffic or doing HD 4x4 work, the under hood temps are often too hot. I've had to replace the upper rad hose prematurely, and the heat can effect electrical connectors and the coolant/trans fluid temps to climb higher than normal.
I appreciate John taking the time today to post in the how to section, on installing the vents. Mega replies happened real quick!

I don't have heat issues either, plow reference aside. But don't forget, we have manual transmissions. Automatics are huge heat generators by comparison.
