broke my winch today.
was using it to tension, cut, and pull down dead trees. that part all went fine. it was when I went to respool it and I had to pull all the line out, and some ******* forgot to unhook it from the anchor i was using to drag the line all the way out, and I ripped the cable from the tie point on the drum. FYI, the ******* was me.

Guess I'll be upgrading to that synthetic winch line I've been wanting, sooner rather than later.

Well I'm glad it performed well. It was just time to upgrade!

I finally installed the industrial PCV filter. While on my way to Napa I learned how to do a burnout, will post pictures of PCV set up tomorrow.

sorting through my options:
1) re-crimp an eyelet on to the steel cable ($unknown)
2) replace steel cable with another steel cable ($unknown)
3) replace steel cable (and roller fairlead) with a synthetic cable and aluminum fairlead ($300 est.)
4) replace entire winch with another one from HF ($300 est.)

the winch works perfectly fine, but it is showing some rust in places from the couple of times I had to use it in foul weather, which is pretty much WHY I bought the damn thing.

anyone know of any how-to's to replace the eyelet? it looks like it's just a piece of copper, and almost like a really big ass electrical terminal. if that's the case can I buy one and just smoosh it on?

you just need a giant crimper to make the eyelet.
as big as a bolt cutter.

maybe use Wire Rope Clips instead?
you might need thimble too.

I'm thinking you could. If it's the same set up of my Warn, I bet you could. I wouldn't replace the whole winch over that. Synthetic cable would be good, but I wouldn't upgrade just because of this.

3 choices of things you should keep around, just in case.
i've done auto work under a pair of the blue popup ones. certainly better than getting beat down on by the sun or rain.

think i found my clunk.
or at least, I found something.
driver's side rear lower control arm bolt was loose. as in I could turn the nut and bolt by hand.
i'll be calling the shop on monday to schedule another free front end alignment I guess.

I'm really surprised the Harbor Freight winch bashing hasn't yet started on you. :happy175:

I actually know nothing about winches (among many other things) but I know three people who have HF winches and all three like them. They use them often too.

and finally I played with the rear adjusters.
finally have parking brakes that work.
noting that they work better when going in reverse than forwards.
and I'm pretty sure I installed the passenger adjuster backwards. I can't see the star wheel through the opening. oops.
next time I rotate the tires I'll pull the caliper and rotor, and see if I can't switch it easily enough.
