I got a Bluetooth OBD2 reader and an app called JScan today. This app is pretty incredible, letting you diagnose issues with specific modules (not just engine codes), as well as read live data and change specific settings. It makes your phone or tablet into a bidirectional scanner / programmer.
Playing around with options on the KK, I was able to do the following:
- Increased the tire size to the upper limit for the traction control program (29.25 in tires; I have 30.25 in tires but it is closer than the 28.65 in that was stock). This should help my speedometer be closer to accurate and maybe help reduce unwanted esp activation (traction control) when making sharp turns at low speeds. (This is a problem on lifted KK’s with larger tires.)
- When I regear the Jeep, I will be able to set the gear ratios to 4.10 or 4.56 depending on what I end up going with.
- Ran the HVAC control calibration program so all the knobs and actuators are synced up again. They got a little off when I disassembled the dash and changed out the heater core box.
- Enabled daytime running lights and set their brightness to 50% of normal headlights. Programmed them to drop out on one side when a blinker is activated.
- I could have enabled fog lights to be able to be on concurrently with high beams, but I didn’t want to change that setting.
- Enabled the trailer tow package, although I added all the hardware for it years ago.
- Checked for trouble codes on every single module. Not only was I able to see current and pending codes, but also historic codes that had been fixed or went away on their own. Pretty cool.
Check out
https://jscan.net/ if you’re interested in getting the app and obd2 dongle. It was only $31 for the dongle on Amazon and $21 per VIN on JScan to enable all the advanced and bidirectional features. I think this is a great alternative to a $350 scan tool, and it is specifically made for Jeeps (and a few other Mopars). I used it on my 07 XK Commander today as well to do a number of similar mods.
