Finally got some work out of Aaron, huh?
Ha! Yeah. :whip:
Actually he's been really great about it... working on it off and on whenever the parts and decent weather was available.
And this afternoon... I had it out on the streets. It got a bath, tank filled, tires inflated, and cleaned the glass. All good. Just in time to take it to work tomorrow.
... just might as well pack all the miles on the car since it's been on its last legs for 5 years now
Wow..You are not having much luck on the valve train lately Jayme.:thumbsdown:The engine suffered another dropped valve seat. Happened about 3 years back also, and we had the bank 2 head rebuilt then. It failed again this past July. Same bank, different seat. Turns out the first time we had it rebuilt, it was to "lower than factory" tolerances. :emotions34: We didn't do our homework at the time. :disgust: We did some research this time and found a highly recommended performance shop guy that builds for race cars. We pulled both of the heads for rebuild this time - he rebuilt them to "tighter than factory" tolerances.
While it was all apart, we replaced a lot of the factory components - coils, injectors, gaskets, etc. - since the odo has over 230K miles on it. Let's just say the top end of the engine was gone through very thoroughly.
Purrs like a kitten... for now. [-o<
Yep...I have owned one of those engines in another vehicle. The mighty Mopar 2.7 found in the '99-04 Intrepid...My first one self destructed at 142k miles...spun bearings due to oil starvation most likely... The replacement is still running strong at 180k miles as far as I know. I sold the car with 236k miles on the odometer. I miss the comfortable ride, but not the headache of constantly worrying when it's going to detonate. It leaves me to wonder sometimes if they REALLY did their homework on engines when they design and build them. Then again, look what happens when you CAD build an engine without actually testing it, throw it in a car only to see most of them blow up due to the fact the CAD couldn't account for real world factors.

Yep...horrible oil starvation on the 99-02 2.7 Intrepids. Plus, that's a big car for that little motor! Lots of design issues. ..internal water pump driven by the way-too-long timing chain, poor oil galleys in the heads...plastic coolant housing that popped on a regular basis causing lots of overheating...ugh... The 3.5 was pretty stout though...I remember when eBay was just loaded with those Intrepids, going for dirt cheap prices because they all had knocks. I had a co-worker had one like 40k miles or something one he bought brand new and the engine detonated. Ended up sending it to the scrap yard.
What does the hockey puck do up there?
